Vello HR-2 overview

  • 1Description

The dedicated Vello HR-2 Lens Hood (52mm Screw-On) is specifically designed for use with Nikon's 55mm f/1.2 Ai, 50mm f/1.4 AF, 50mm f/1.8 AF, and 50mm f/1.8D AF lenses. It is primarily used to prevent unwanted stray light from entering the lens by extending and shading the end of it. A dedicated hood is crafted to perfectly suit the specific focal length of the lens it is designed for. Additionally, this hood features a non-glare matte finish on the interior surface to further prevent or limit lens flare. Also, since the end of the lens is extended, you get the added benefit of some extra protection from accidental impact.

This lens hood features anti-reflective ridges on its interior.

Designed to accommodate the exact angle of view of the camera's lens
Minimizes flare and ghosting by blocking out stray light
Protects your lens from accidental impact and the elements

    Vello HR-2 reviews

    HR-2 Dedicated Lens Hood (52mm Screw-On) is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 49.
Rated 2 out of 5 by from Ok I like how this hood collapses to fit nicely in my bag, and does the job of blocking stray light but it is not something I would buy again. Drawbacks: - The rubber material offers little protection in my opinion. I expected a sturdier type of material but the hood is super bendy. If dropped or even bumped, I don't think it would offer any protection to the lens. It would just buckle. - The rubber also takes on any lint it is ever near. Like a fleece coat with cat hair. For now I am keeping it on there but will be looking for a threaded alternative and definitely no be purchasing another one.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Simple and folds away This flexible lens hood worked well on my 50mm. It simply folds back and over the lens when not in use. I read another review on this HR-2 rubber lens hood that said it was too wide in the folded position. I think that reviewer didn't fold it back enough. All you have to do is push it back far enough so that it folds completely over the lens barrel and it won't stick out at all. Only time will tell whether or not the rubber will disintegrate, but for now it seems durable and is certainly worth the price. Perhaps the only drawback I can see is that you have to screw it on rather than attaching it with a twist-snap.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works Perfectly I keep this lens hood on my 50mm lens all the time. Even installed on the lens, it folds up and takes up zero room room in my bag so there is no reason to ever remove it.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Convenient but not durable. This is the first collapsible lens hood I've owned. When I purchased my Nikon D7100 about a year ago, this hood came with the 50mm lens. It is convenient not having to remove and store a lens hood when you don't want it, but the rubber came unglued and the hood is no longer usable after what I would consider light to moderate use. It is relatively cheap, so it comes down to personal preference if replacing it, possibly annually, is worth the convenience and extra space in your camera bag.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from 3/30/15 HR-2 Vello Hood for Nikon Lens Review I purchased two HR-2s to fit on an older pair of Nikon lenses (AF Nikkor 50mm 1:8D and a manual Nikon 24mm 2:8). I don't use UV filters but still wanted a bit of protection and shade to eliminate possible flare. The HR-2 works great on both. I can still put both lenses in my Shoot Sac bag. Great product and they look good or at least do not detract from the lens looks. I think you could also use them in conjunction with a UV filter. I had a Vello on another lens. It was on the lens when I bought it used. I could get the filter and hood off the lens, but could not separate the UV filter from the hood. I probably tightened it trying to take it off. The HR-2 fits a 52mm filter size. I can also put the lens cap on with the HR-2 attached.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Rubber Lenshood for Nikon 55mm f/1.2 My original 40+ year old lens hood attachment thingy broke. This Vello hood works great. Before I order it I saw someone complaining about the thickness of the rubber. I agree, it won't do as a replacement lawnmower wheel. But,it serves wonderfully as a lens hood that I don't have to keep removing/reversing.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good Product Rubber hoods go back to the film days. The main advantage is the hood stays on the lens and can be rapidly deployed when needed and folded when in your camera pack. The Vello product is very similar to the factory hood. When folded it doesn't take up much more space than the lens cap does. I am fairly easy on equiptment and would NEVER use any hood to protect the lens from bumps and dings. The only con I can come up with is that I can't purchase rubber hoods for all my lenses.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Decent Works fine but rubber is not as thick as Nikons HR2 hood. Not sure if this will hold up over time.
