It is primarily used to prevent unwanted stray light from entering the lens by extending and shading the end of it. Additionally, this hood features a non-glare matte finish on the interior surface to further prevent or limit lens flare. Also, since the end of the lens is extended, you get the added benefit of some extra protection from accidental impact.

Vello HR-2 Overview

The dedicated Vello HR-2 Lens Hood (52mm Screw-On) is specifically designed for use with Nikon's 55mm f/1.2 Ai, 50mm f/1.4 AF, 50mm f/1.8 AF & 50mm f/1.8D AF lenses. It is primarily used to prevent unwanted stray light from entering the lens by extending and shading the end of it. A dedicated hood is crafted to perfectly suit the specific focal length of the lens it is designed for. Additionally, this hood features a non-glare matte finish on the interior surface to further prevent or limit lens flare. Also, since the end of the lens is extended, you get the added benefit of some extra protection from accidental impact.

Excellent rubber hood with just the right amount of flex v stiffness, at a great price. Much better than a rigid lens shade. Very well made.

This is NOT an HR-2 lens hood.

I have an original HR-2 and this is a very very poor imitation. It is much too large and as a result it's much larger in diameter than the lens it's mounted to. I tried in on my 105 Micro Nikkor and after 3 days in my bag it had been distorted by the lens slot in the bag. it now resides in my useless accessories box.

As such, I would need to know which lens you own, or what filter threads it uses (not which camera you own) in order to confirm or deny if the lens hood would be compatible for your equipment.
