Vello FreeWave Overview

Whether capturing images in the studio or on location, the Vello FreeWave Wireless Remote Shutter Release adds flexibility and versatility to your shooting style. You can interact with a model, view the scene or set from alternate angles, or set a camera by a stream to capture an image of a bear hunting while you remain at a safe distance away. This particular FreeWave unit is compatible with most Canon cameras that have a 3-pin connection.

This versatile shutter release features Smart Code technology so you can configure it to operate on up to 16 million possible radio channels. You can easily switch channels to zero in on a frequency that provides optimal range and functionality.

The FreeWave operates with radio frequency (RF) technology, so a direct line of sight is not necessary. Radio waves pass through objects including windows and walls. It is unlike other wireless remotes on the market that operate on an Infrared (IR) system and require a direct line of sight between transmitter and receiver to make things work.

Since touching the camera even lightly while capturing an image can create a blurred image, the FreeWave eliminates this by tripping the shutter without any disturbances. This is critical when photographing subjects up close, as well as for long exposures and macros. It is also extremely valuable when photographing nature, wildlife, and other subjects that are difficult for you to get close to.

Canon Camera Compatibility
EOS 10D, 20D, 30D, 40D, 50D, 5D, 5D Mark II, 5D Mark III, 7D, 1D, Mark II, Mark IIn, Mark III, Mark IV, 1DS, Mark II, Mark III, 1DX
Smart Code
The FreeWave's Smart Code feature allows you to operate on 16,000,000 possible radio channels. No DIP switches to set, and one transmitter can trigger multiple receivers. The units have been synchronized at the factory, so your system works right out of the box. To maximize signal quality and range, use the Smart Code technology to sense the quiet frequencies in your environment and synchronize on that channel.
Extended Range
The FreeWave can fire the camera's shutter from distances up to 320 feet.
Multifunction
Trigger your camera wirelessly or wired. Wired triggering works even if the receiver battery is dead or missing.
Dual-Function Release
Press the transmitter's button halfway to focus and fully to trigger the shutter.
Delayed Release
The two-second delay function gives you extra time to get into position.
Multi-Exposure
You can take multiple shots with one press of the trigger.
Long Exposures
With the FreeWave you can control the length of the exposure remotely.
LED Indicators
Two LED indicators confirm prefocus and exposure when in the wireless mode.
Versatile
The FreeWave includes a camera release cable that works with your particular camera model. By simply changing to another cable (additional purchase required) a single receiver can work with many other cameras as well.

Second Purchase

I've owned this same unit for 5 or 6 years and it's always worked great with my Fuji system. Then one day it just became unreliable. After investigating a lot of other options I decided to just buy a new one. Unfortunately the cord that came with my old unit wasn't available anymore. BH assured me this on would work. It didn't. Fortunately the old cord from the previous unit works fine. I'm not thrilled I don't have a new cord because lets be real, at some point this one will fail, but I'm happy I don't have to change my system as I like everything else about how it works.

Outstanding customer service

I purchased this quite a while ago and hadn't used it. When I went to use it I realized that the cable that came with it was not for my R5 or R5 ll. B&H had the vendor contact me. They show me where the three pin connector was needed and sent me one N/C. This was after 6 or seven months past the purchase date. You can't do better than that.

question

Does this work with the canon rebel t5? If not is there anything I can use for my t5 that is wireless? Also can it start a video?
Asked by: Anonymous
No, the Vello FreeWave Wireless Remote Shutter Release for Canon w/3-Pin Connection, B&H # VERWC2, would not be compatible for use with the Canon EOS Digital Rebel T5 DSLR camera. The Canon EOS Digital Rebel T5 DSLR camera uses Canons E3 2.5mm sub-miniphone remote terminal, while the above remote comes with the Canon N3 3-pin remote terminal. As such, you would instead need the Vello FreeWave Wireless Remote Shutter Release (Canon Sub-Mini Connection), B&H # VERWC1, for your needs. Unfortunately, we have no remotes that would start video recording; video recording may only be started by pressing the Movie button on the back of the camera near the viewfinder. Remotes have a shutter button for releasing the cameras shutter, but no button designed for video recording.

question

Is the 2 second delay an option or a requirement? I need reactive true life timing.

The 2 second delay option is only an option. You can fire in real time.

Will the Vello Remote Shutter Release cables work ...

Will the Vello Remote Shutter Release cables work with the Pixel TW283 (sold in the UK) ? I need a cable for Olympus OMD D M1 III. Thx.
Asked by: Robert
While I am unfamiliar with the Pixel TW283 (which we do not carry), if the item has a 2.5mm sub-miniphone remote terminal connector, then the Vello 2.5mm Remote Shutter Release Cable for Cameras with 2.5mm Sub-Mini Connections, B&H # VERCCC125, should be compatible for your usage needs.

question

Will this work on a Canon 70d?
Asked by: Anonymous
The Canon 70D doesn't have the 3-Pin Connections. For the 70D, you would need the Vello FreeWave Wireless Remote Shutter Release with the Sub-Mini Connection (B&H # VERWC1).

question

Can the remote be used to start and stop video recording on the Canon 5D MKiii?? Will the half press focus while in video mode?
Asked by: Andy
Unfortunately no, this remote only performs the same functions that the camera's shutter button does. The 5D Mark III has a separate red recording button to start and stop video recording. It is also not designed to auto focus in video, only photo.

question

How does it work to change shutter speed remotely? Is there some way to see the shutter speed on the remote? Or will I need some model with an LED screen for that? If so, what's the cheapest/best outfit for that? And I assume compatible with a Canon 5d mark iii
Asked by: Anonymous
No, the wireless shutter release, Vello FreeWave Wireless Remote Shutter Release for Canon w/3-Pin Connection, is only a shutter release. It does not control any settings. The only ones that allow you to do that use a smart device. This is an example of one, CamRanger Wireless Transmitter Kit with Extra Battery for Select Canon and Nikon DSLRsB&H # CA1001K (B&H Kit)http://bhpho.to/1cr2v5a
