Bolt VM-110 overview

  • 1Description

The Bolt VM-110 LED Macro Ring Light is a compact LED ring light that is ideal for use when photographing close-up subject matter. It features a 48 LED array and has an effective working distance of 4.9' / 1.49m with a guide number of 15' / 4.57m (ISO 100). The continuous light source helps you easily see the effects of the lighting and also enables its use when recording video. Four clip-on diffusers are included to further adjust the quality of light from the ring light: clear, frosted, amber, and blue. The brightness can also be modified, from -1.5 to + 1.5EV, and you can set the light to illuminate from only the left or right side for added dimensionality when shooting. Additionally, to help conserve battery power, the light can be set to work in flash mode, which will turn on the light for approximately a half second each time the shutter is released.

The power unit features a 2" / 5.1cm backlit LCD monitor for displaying battery power and ring light settings. It attaches to your camera via an accessory shoe and requires 4x AA batteries. A stand is also included to hold the power unit on its own, or on a light stand or tripod via the integrated 1/4"-20 socket. For mounting the ring light to your lens, eight different adapter rings are included to fit a range of lens diameters: 49, 52, 55, 58, 62, 67, 72, and 77mm.

Note: Not compatible with Fuji X-T2 and X-Pro 2

Four light modes available:
  • Light Mode will keep the light on continuously.

    Bolt VM-110 reviews

VM-110 LED Macro Ring Light is rated 3.9 out of 5 by 178.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Ideal for close up subjects! It really shines when you're very close to the subject. The catchlights are tiny but visible. It's best to use the ringflash freehand, meaning that instead of mounting it directly around the lens, you hold it slightly above the subject or wherever you want to fill the shadows. It lights up pretty well, actually. The device itself is so simple, it's fool-proof. Some might prefer more options but it has all that you need to start quickly: adapters for lenses of every diameter and diffuers (cold, warm, and neutral). You can use this flash as a continuous light, flash, left flash, and right flash. My only complaint is that the light output is a bit limited.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Close-Up Light Source I first saw a ring light years ago and wanted one until I saw the price. Then I saw the price on this one and decided to take a chance on it. I'm sure other manufactures build one a bit more solid than this one, but dollar for dollar, my opinion says this is your best bet. It has various settings for left half, right half, full ring, less intensity, flash mode, and continuous for setting exposure manually which happens to be my favorite method. I use this on a Canon 100mm f2.8 macro and have been very pleased with the results. I rated it 4 stars out of 5 based on build quality, but would rate it a 6 for the way it works.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect Simplicity This ring light is exactly what i needed and does exactly what i want it to. It has a normal strobe function that works, and then a constant-on function that is also great. You can adjust the brightness by a few stops up or down. It also comes with a frosted diffuser and various colored diffuser. It takes 4 AA batteries and is easily attachable and detachable from the front of the camera after installing the front of lens attachment. The only downside I found with the product is that I cant attach my lens cover with the ring light attachment on it. Other wise it is great, bright, and flashes. Cant ask for much more.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great LED Ring Light I was pleasantly surprised with this unit. Very nice interface on the back for selecting light intensity... etc. You have to hold on/off button for a while to turn it on. Also, even with highest light intensity, it is only good for short distances, like 3-4 feet max. But then it is for a Macro setup isn't it! Only problem I encountered was with reflections from flat surfaces parallel to the film plane/front light plane; then I needed side light or bounce from other units. If you leave light on continuously, then better bring extra set of batteries (I am using rechargeable batteries). Works great on my 60mm Micro-Nikkor.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Outstanding, low-cost Ring Light/Flash If you enjoy, or spend time shooting macro photography, you'll enjoy adding this Bolt product to your equipment. Right out of the box, you will notice that the unit is pretty much plastic - including the assortment of ring adapters which are included. However, unless you are a serious macro photog - this unit should suffice. Advise would be to make certain that you do not cross-thread an adapter ring, and perhaps handle with care as a general rule - Given that name-brand ring lights cost hundreds of dollars, I would assume that you will get far more than your money's worth, being able to illuminate fill and eliminate shadows for close up details - all while getting wonderful results.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Almost a good product but... Great packaging, Nice LED interface, but the adapter rings are CHEAPO. The 77mm ring screws in and as soon as I attach the ring light the adapter ring falls right back off the lens. If they made the rings of a harder plastic or possibly aluminum it would probably stay and work fine. Anyway, since all my lenses are 77mm L-series lenses I can't really use this product and it's going back for a refund. Additionally I do wish the ring were just a little bit bigger diameter. It will crop off wide lenses with rounded corners. Also, not quite sure what the bright Cyan ring is for since the LEDs are already roughly daylight balanced. Anyone like blue skin tones? CRI seems ok at first glance & didn't notice any green spike So this is going back for a refund. Probably a great value if you are shooting with lenses with smaller filter diameters. But for pro lenses, just plan on getting something more substantial.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Does what it's supposed to do This is a great little gadget and fairly inexpensive for what it does. Obviously great for macro work and allows me to get once impossible shots in low or no light. I don't use it as a flash, just to illuminate the subject which does tend to suck up battery life. Recommend using with lithium or good rechargeable batteries. The provided filters work well and this ringlight is best suited to lenses with smallish filter sizes. Also recommend buying a pouch or something to put it in. The cord between the power supply and light doesn't seem to come off so you need to be careful when storing it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Yes, I would buy this product again. Nice little ring light. Works well for my needs. Not a very bright light, but doe a good job for flower macro photography. Handle it with care. It is made of very thin and light plastic material. Don't tighten the lens adapters too tight, as they seem to cross thread easily and are difficult to remove from the lens. The ring light fits loosely on the lens and the coiled cord tends to turn it so that the left and right lights mode are not at 90 degrees. The flash works good. The brightness controls are ok, but not enough +/- range. The price was a real good value for what it is, and it suits my needs.
