Manfrotto 057 overview

  • 1Description

The Manfrotto 057 3-Section Carbon Fiber Tripod w/ Rapid Center Column is a heavy-duty tripod that's intended for use with video cameras and large still cameras. With a 39.7 lb load capacity, the lightweight carbon fiber leg tubes of the 057 tripod provide rigid support even under a considerable amount of weight.

The tripod's rapid center column has a non-rotating, three-faceted design for increased system stability. To enable extremely low-angle shooting, you can unscrew the center-post collar, remove the center column, and attach the collar directly to the included low-angle adapter (through the chassis). With this method the 057 tripod can achieve a minimum height of 8.7".

The round carbon fiber legs feature user-adjustable flip locks to free and secure the leg stages. An included key for tightening the flip locks attaches to a leg for ever-ready access. With both the legs and the center column fully extended, the tripod reaches a maximum height of 61.8".

Retractable spikes in feet
Spirit level near bottom of center column
Screw locks for tightening a tripod head to the center-post collar

    Manfrotto 057 reviews

057 Carbon Fiber Tripod is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 11.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Tripod I bought this tripod as an upgrade over an old Bogen aluminum model that i'd been using for years. The 057 is as advertised. Solid, stable and well constructed. I paired it with a Manfrotto 393 head and use it primarily with a Canon 5D Mk. II and Canon 500mm f4 lens combination. I photograph birds both perched and in flight and this tripod definitely provide the necessary stability for such shots. I will say that even though the legs are made of carbon fiber this is still a big tripod and not the lightest piece of gear, but I like the solid feel of the unit. All of the adjustments work smoothly and easily. Although I likely won't use all of the leg positions and center column option it is nice to have those available. All in all it was definitely worth the investment.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very Satisfied I ordered this tripod to hold a telescope for astronomy. I wanted something that would provide stable views at medium/high magnifications while still being easy to carry and transport. It serves the purpose very well. It's surprisingly compact when folded up considering how beefy it is, how tall it gets, and the fact that it's only a three section, vs. a four section. It is a very sturdy tripod. It's not the lightest thing if you are looking to carry it all day on a trail for photography, or backpack with it up a mountain. But if you are looking for a very stout tripod with a lot of stability, it's great. I find carbon fiber dampens vibrations much better and more quickly than aluminum if both are a similar size/class tripod. The leg sections fit together very precisely, allowing virtually no lateral movement even when unlocked and fully extended. They actually offer slight resistance to extending/retracting due to the air seal around the leg sections and make an air hissing sound when extended/retracted). When locked in place they are rock solid. I prefer the lever locks on this tripod to a twist lock system (just personal preference) and they came adjusted well. Not too tight or difficult to lock/unlock, but tight enough to hold totally secure. It's rated to hold 39 lbs, and I have no doubt it would. My load is much less (15-20 pounds tops), and it doesn't flex or get the slightest disturbed by the load. In fact, the mount head I'm using puts the scope about 5-6 off center (not in line with the center column) to allow for full rotation without interfering with the tripod center column or the legs, and it still stays solid and steady, even when rotating the scope around on the offset mount. The center column locks tight and secure without having to crank the lock knob super tight. Snug the knob and the column is firmly held in place. The column is very solid as well, and doesn't flex or shift at all, again despite the offset load. There is a small adjustment screw to adjust how freely the column can slide when unlocked, which is a nice touch. The top plate on the center column is probably a bit larger than it needs to be. Some may not like that, but it doesn't matter with my setup at all. I'm very pleased with the tripod. It's as quick and easy to set up as any of my tripods, and it's incredibly sturdy.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Light, Sturdy & Reliable I purchased the Manfrotto 057 Carbon Fiber Tripod to support my DSLR heavy telephoto zoom lenses, as well as night photography & certain landscape shoots. The construction & configuration is exactly what you would expect from a Manfrotto tri-pod.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from nice gear A really nice unit. The only disappointing thing is that when it arrived I removed it from the box and one of the feet fell off. I then had to use a special hex key to remove the leg, and stuffed around for ages wondering how to refasten the foot. I called the website. Busy signal for hours. They referred me to some one else. More busy signals until I got a tech who said they must have forgotten to glue it during manufacture. You can return it or glue it yourself. I chose to glue it back myself, and it has been fine since.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Really Solid Tripod I wanted a more substantial tripod for use with my DSLR and new 500mm f/4 lens. The Manfrotto 055 Carbon model I already had felt a little too light for the job when outfitted with my Wimberley 2 gimbal head even though it was fine with a 400mm f/5.6 lens. The 057 model seems to fit the bill perfectly. Carbon legs are much more robust and everything just seems like it was made for this job. Very nice product. Like nearly every piece of Manfrotto gear I have ever purchased, this is a keeper.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Great legs - terrible center column Must have been 2 different groups that designed this tripod. The CF legs and magnesium spider do meet all the advertising hype. But the center column is definitely not pro calibre. 1. The top plate is extremely large. This interferes with the use of manfrotto 405 and 410 geared heads. The movements of the head are severly restricted. And there is not enough clearance between some of the knobs and the large top plate. In other words, pinched and cut fingers and lots of cursing. 2. The aluminum center column shaft is removable (low angle adapter feature) and the top plate can be attached directly to the spider. Problems here also. When the bottom screw is tightened it pulls the top plate significantly off level. This makes any attempt at panoramic or precision still life work futile. 3 Manfrotto has always had an extensive line of pro accessories for their tripods; one of the reasons they were so popular in studios. How many accessories for 057 tripods? ZERO. And querying Manfrotto about the needs gets ZERO response. No leveling center column and the oversized top plate prevents using existing leveling adapters. No short center columns. No accessory feet. etc. etc. etc. etc. If you do any serious studio work or video forget the 057's. Mine has been in a corner gathering dust since I bought it and then found out about all the short comings and the total lack of interest to address them at Manfrotto. Quess it is time to finally learn those $%^$%#$ twist locks if I want a pro CF tripod.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Rock solid ! No way you can overload this tripod. No vibration at all, it's rock solid. A bit heavy, but it's no big deal. The only real complain I have is that with my old Manfrotto 190PRO I can use the central column on a horizontal plane, I can't do the same with my 057. It's going to be my last tripod for sure.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent tripod Recently purchased. B&H was quick to ship it and it showed up before the scheduled delivery date. Used for a couple different shoots. Inside or out it works great. Very sturdy, excellent build quality. Definitely satisfied with my purchase.
