Does the low angle adapter come with the tripod as standard, or does it need to be purchased separately? I am buying this tripod solely because it will reach my eye height WITHOUT the center column raised. I don't want a centre column at all, in other words.
Manffotto low angle adapters are usually sold separately. It is not included in the box with this tripod.

There is an adapter that you will need to use to use bowl heads on a flat base tripod such as the 057. Take a look at the Manfrotto 325N Video Head Adapter, which will allow you to use a 75mm or 100mm half bowl on a flat base tripod with a 3/8 thread: http://bhpho.to/1paQ8Rm

Will this tripod work with the Oben GH-50 Gimbal Head?
Yes. I use a Wimberley WH200 that is very similar. The tripod is very strong and stable.
