Quantum Instruments QF8 overview

  • 1Description

The Quantum Qflash TRIO Basic Flash combines several of Quantum's venerable Qflash system technologies into one complete dedicated shoe mount flash, and has full E-TTL / E-TTL II dedication to Canon cameras. Slip it onto the camera hot-shoe, connect any Quantum Turbo battery (not included), and shoot studio-quality flash photos non-stop, 24 hours a day without slowing down or overheating.

The Qflash uses parabolic reflectors for clean, even light spread, and the reflectors are removable for bare-bulb lighting. The flash can be used either on-camera on its own or on-camera as a master to other off-camera units.

The TRIO Basic includes many of the same functions as other Qflash models including: Manual, Auto, Auto-Fill, TTL, and Program (Pre-Sets) modes. The TRIO Basic has high-speed sync capabilities, and can be powered by any Quantum heavy-duty Turbo-series battery, which allows for almost unlimited rapid-fire, full-power flashes. It has a user-replaceable flash tube, a coiled 6' power cable, a removable reflector and includes 2 flat white UV diffusers. A wide variety of optional light modifiers are available. A power pack is not included.

Qflash TRIO Basic Flash for Canon Cameras is rated 3.9 out of 5 by 17.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love at first use! I had a lot of problems with my Canon 580EX II overheating from frequent use on weddings, which meant that I missed many great shots for having the flash cool off wait time! Grrrrr.. so I decided to invest in the Quantum Trio system and boy I will never ever look at any other flash system again! I did a wedding on last Saturday and then a full day maternity shoot the next day with no recharge of the battery and it held and went down to just half use after all this! I never missed a shot, no over heating, always just the perfect light! I highly recommend this system for field work to any pro photographer!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Machine-gun flash If you need a rapid fire flash that will not meltdown, this is it. I shot 1100 shots in 30 minutes of a fashion catwalk with the trio and a Turbo3 pack and it just kept going. Similar efforts in the past have resulted in 2 dead (1 melted and 1 burnt out) 580ex units. The build quality is not great and the hotshoe mount is truly terrible - but there's nothing quite like it for rapid fire performance. The diffuser, reflector and the bare-bulb capability gives it more versatility than the average hotshoe flash. If Quantum stuck a metal shoe mount on this, I would have given it 5 stars.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Great light, poor construction I bought this to replace my 580EXII flash using it with my 5DMkII. The first thing that happened after only 2 weekends of using this flash, the horizontal axis has locking clicks which broke. While at a wedding, if I turned the camera for a vertical shot, the flash head would drop and point to the floor. - Calling the manufacturer about the warranty repair would take the new flash out of commission for a minimum of 3 weeks. So, I didn't send it in because I had more weddings to shoot and I thought I would get by with tape to get me through the season. After about 6 more photo gigs the high voltage cord is now shorting out.(short or open, I don't know which) The flash just goes dead and I have to adjust the cord to bring it back. This weekend I noticed the hot shoe on my camera has some play in it and it is causing the flash to lose connection. I attribute this to the bulky heavy flash on the top of the camera. If you are looking at this product, wondering if your camera can support that big flash head, it cannot. Unless you are not moving around much with this attached to your camera. (Like weddings) Stationary, minor movement, it would do fine. Lastly, because I am using different focal lengths throughout the shoot, I am constantly changing the reflector setup. Sometimes with the difuser, without the difuser, sometimes bare bulb flash for ultra wide shots. The difuser that fits on the front of the reflector is another poor design. Easy to misplace or lose on a location shoot. I modified it to attach with velcro and that seems to be helping. If I had this to do over again, I would have stayed with the 580EXII or found something else.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from So far so Good For years I have battling my Canon 580ex II flashes, constantly overheating and missing shots. It's nice to finally have a flash that will keep up with the professional demands of wedding and event photography. I have been using the Quantum T2 flashes for close to 15 years, they never failed, so I thought I would give the Trio basic a try. I did not require the built in TTL radio transmitters that come with the standard Trio because I have several Pocket Wizards to fire my T2 Quantums remotely. The Basic was exactly what I was looking for. It is a little large for a shoe mount flash but the performance, and the ability to shoot bare bulb outweighs the size issue. I think Quantum could have done a better job with their shoe mount system, you really have to tighten the snot out of the Trio or it feels like it is loose on the camera. I did some quick flash reading comparisons with the Trio with the wide angle diffuser and the 580ex II with OMNI bounce- the Trio came in just shy of 1 stop more powerful.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good Flash for any use Sure, this flash is different than Canon Flash, but I was looking just this flash to solve my problems for my work. Of course, certain aspects of construction such as the attachment of the flash with the machine can be constructed better, but the TTL system and very good, is the sequence of flashes is good, the rapport of good shots for number pictures is impressive. I shoot with a Canon EOS 1D Mark IV to 10 fts per second for 36 shots continuous, and is not have different pictures, all images is perfect light. it's valid

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Better than 580EX The TTL works better than the 580EX. The auto option is very good and more reliable than the TTL. The auto focus assist is just as good as canon. It's not as fast to attach as the canon. Q flash is Hard to tighten on to the camera. Reflector dome is changeable but takes much longer that adding a stofen diffuser to a canon flash. The Q flash is huge and doesn't fit in any of my standard cases. Lacks convenience of using AA's in a pinch. Uses the Quantum batteries much more efficiently that the 580EX.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from A useful flash with a few quirks I have been using Quantum flash heads since they started making them! What I do appreciate is the quick recycle times Good exposure and color output Sturdy build of batteries and heads Good dedication to Canon (and I would guess Nikon as well)The fact that you can use the unit for years What I don't like: It's 2013, the screen could be much larger and nicer The reflectors are still attached by a very primitive system that leaves you with the probability that it will fall off in the middle of a job (and it inevitably always does)! There is enough room on the head for a better distribution of the buttons, and for a pro flash I would have expected and hoped for easier accessibility to important functions rather then playing with buttons and menu's. It would be great if they could get the flash head down to the size of a SB 910 at least. It is still too bulky Dedicated camera head's like the Trio and Trio basic really need to have a input socket to plug in a radio slave for off camera use!It would be nice if an optical slave could be built in to the head.In short I love the flash for the speed if offers which is great for rapid firing with out over heating. The battery is very good and gives a real decent amount of power (you can squeeze through a whole wedding with one). It is built well and recharges at a really decent rate!I think that although the flash head is truly a useful unit, they still need to refine it quite a bit more.
