    Impact D-1000 Reviews

    D1000 1,000W AC Dimmer Control (110-120V) is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 100.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from You can't beat it for the money. I am a Local 728 lighting technician in Hollywood. I work with every light and dimmer set up out there. I have read many of the other reviews about people complaining about humming/ noise / filament vibration from this product. This is nothing unique to this particular product! This type of dimmer is known in the film industry (regardless of brand) as a hand squeezer. In fact we make them ourselves out of parts from an electrical contractor supplier / * parts. All of these type of hand squeezers hum when dimmed down. YOU HAVE TO USE 1K or 2K VARIAC IF YOU NEED IT TO BE TOTALLY SILENT. They are a lot more expensive, bigger and heavier too! The good news is that this Impact 1000W Dimmer is cheaper to buy complete from B&H than building one yourself from *parts. Just understand its limitations and it will work great for any incandescent fixture 1000W or less.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good overall Good for the money. Though it dims all the way from full output to no light output, the current is not entirely shut off when turned all the way down. Therefore the filament of the lamp still makes a buzzing noise, and long periods in this mode may wear on the lamp life. Would be much better if, after dimming all the way, the slider went even further to switch off power completely. I built another one out of a 1K in-wall dimmer & other parts--it switches all the way off, but I paid about as much or more for parts, and had to spend a couple hours making it. I haven't seen any better ready-made 1K dimmer that is this affordable. Would give five stars if not for the singing filament when dimmed down fully.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Simply elegant I use a lot of Lowell lights (I also use a lot of LEDs, but you can't beat Lowell for value- I'm a big fan) but constantly trying to adjust brightness with ND gels and balance the lights to each other is a time-consuming pain. This dimmer is perfect for what I need; to control the light without changing colour temperature. My largest Lowell light is 750w, and finding something with a 1000w rating that won't break the bank is a real find! Super easy to use. It even came with spare fuses. I'm very happy and will probably buy a couple more in the new year. ...also perfect for on-set practicals!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from 2 out of 3 DOA I had good luck with Impact in the past. Most of the stuff worked great. I have 2 of the older 600 watt Impact Dimmers which are about 2 years old and still work perfect. I have NOT had good luck with this new 1000 watt version. I've tried 3 so far and only 1 has worked. The first one I got turned on the light, but did not dim; the second one works fine and the 3rd one was DOA. Not sure what the problem is or if I'm just having really bad luck. B&H is good about returns, but the time it takes to send things back and forth is time consuming and I really just need a 2nd 1000 watt dimmer.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works great on my 1k Softboxes I shoot a lot of interviews in many different locations. Using this dimmer on my 1k tungsten softboxes allows me to dial in the exact amount of light output needed for each location. To dial the light output very low you have to turn it up, and then dial it back down. I've never needed it that low on set or location however so this doesn't bother me at all but I could see how it would be annoying if you had to get that low output often. The slider moves with some resistance which I like for two reasons- I can hit that desired output with precision, and if accidentally bumped it tends to stay were it is.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Indespensible Lighting Tool! I'm giving this 4 stars because I believe the construction is a bit weak. I bought one of these last year and after one shoot it stopped working. Almost a year later I decide to take it apart and try to fix it. Turns out the fuse was just knocked loose the whole time. I popped it back in and it worked again - now I own two more. That being said, I use these with my ARRI 150 and 300 lights and they work great. A must have for interviews and general scene lighting. Really gives me a lot of flexibility.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Simple and Easy to Use I have recently purchased two of these for a Tota kit with two fixtures. They work wonderfully with the Lowel Tota (obviously one light/dimmer). I would like for the cable to be a littler longer, but that can easily be fixed with an extension cable. In fact, these two dimmers fit perfectly inside my Lowel case and are a great addition to my kit. It would be nice, however, if it did reach into the 220/230v for use as I travel.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Works pretty well I bought 3 of these to keep with my Arri SoftBank kit. They work flawlessly on the 150 and 300 but on the 650 it starts making a buzzing sound which is an issue when recording audio. Apparently this happens with certain dimmers when used with certain types of bulbs. I don't think it's a flaw in the dimmer, just something that can occur. Either way, good dimmer and gets the job done for a good price.
