Key Features

If you had to choose a single light shaping tool, you might do well to pick the silver Westcott 7' Silver Umbrella. First of all it's a really big, broad light source that wraps light around your subject yielding clean highlights and rich open shadows. But due to the special shape of the umbrella there's a unique mix of soft enveloping light with the kind of crisp detail you only get from reflectors.

question

Would using a flash gun provide enough light? Or is it for strobes only? Thanks for your insight.
Asked by: Albert
I have used a single flash (Canon 580 EXII) for a little bit of light. If you do it, pull out the build in diffuser to soften/broaden the light so you don't get as dramatic of a hot spot reflected out of it. I have much better luck with two flash guns - both still with the diffuser our and when I need a lot of light I'll fire 3 into it. It is a huge surface so to get nice even (large amount) of light 3 is ideal. If you only have one flash gun then I would honestly pass on this as using only one you'll get a ton of fall off. Go with a Westcott Halo or something smaller like that.

question

I recently watched a YouTube video where the presenter said the centre spindle of the umbrella wouldn't fit through elinchrom strobes. I have a set of d-lite 4's. Is this the case? Thanks
Asked by: Stewart T.
Sorry for the late answer.Yes this is the case. The parabolic shaft will not go into the Elinchrom stobes because they make a thinner shaft on their umbrellas and therefore a smaller opening.

question

Is the diameter for the opened umbrella 7 feet or 86in?
Asked by: Marcus
As a user, I don't care about the "arc-length" of 7' - what I care about is: what is the edge-to-edge diameter - the diameter of the circle the light comes out of across the face of the umbrella... The answer is 70~71" (an inch or two under 6')

question

what actual size? 2.2m is curved size, I wanna know direct diameter...
Asked by: Anonymous
The "arc length" is 7'. but what you are asking is - what is the diameter edge-to-edge across the umbrella - it is about 71"

question

curious how if anyone has used the Paul Buff PLM compared to this?
Asked by: Sean
Paul Buff stuff is made a little better but not enough that I would readily jump to only buying buff. These umbrellas have nice specularity and the construction is solid. I use two with 500 watt lights at weddings, and they do great. Like all umbrellas tho, don't let them tip over.

question

Has anyone tried this against the Impact 7' umbrella? The impact is cheaper and I am wondering which build is better and if the fabrics are same quality. Thanks!
Asked by: Pascal
I received a defective item - the latch was disconnected from the shaft, so the umbrella I received couldn't be held in the open position. I don't see how the Impact brand, or Glow brand from Adorama would be any worse quality than this, and they are significantly cheaper. B&H has been more frustrating than I expected to get an exchange sent out for a defective item.

question

Would this umbrella work with Westcott's Spiderlite TD6 lights? The TD6 is shown on this B&H listing as a Recommended Accessory , but I'd like to hear from someone who has used these two items together and hear their thoughts. Thank you!
Asked by: Kevin J.
Yes it will, check out this video: https://youtu.be/bkJvn5ZJ5qI The TD6s come with a tilter bracket with an umbrella hole, so as long as you still have that piece, it should mount fine.
