The black 10x42 Outland X Binoculars from Celestron feature multicoated optics, BAK4 Roof Prisms, a wide angle of view, and weather-proof construction with rubber armoring. While the multicoated lenses increase transmission and image brightness, the Roof Prisms made of BAK4 optical glass preserve true colors. The wide 5.6° angular field of view allows you to see a linear field of 293' at a distance of 1000 yards, and the center focus with a diopter allow seeing crisp details as close as 14.8'. These binoculars also have a 56 to 74mm interpupillary adjustment range, a 4.2mm exit pupil and 14mm eye relief.

Are these bins phase corrected? What lens do they use -- are they ED lenses?
These are nor phase corrected. They have multicoated optics, BAK4 Roof Prisms. They are no ED.

are they good for a pilot in the cockpit?
I don't fly but have used these for nature viewing (birds, whale watching) and for hiking. The adapter for use with a tripod is great. They have excellent clarity and being waterproof is a plus. The price is right for this type of binocular.

are they good for watching live sports?
Good binoculars but you may find 8X would be better, 10X will give you close view of perhaps three or four players where as a lower magnification will give you a wider field of view. All depends on how far away you are from the action.
