The Blackmagic Design ATEM Camera Converter enables extension of SDI (serial digital interface) / HDMI cameras to distances up to 28 miles (45km) via an optical fiber link. You can connect your camera to the SDI/HDMI inputs to convert videos to optical signals. This optical fiber input can be connected to the switcher program feed to convert to SDI/HDMI outputs for monitoring. In addition, the SDI/HDMI outputs can be switched between return program and camera input for monitoring.

With an internal battery, the converter can be used at remote locations when the cameras are placed at far-off locations. Featured Talkback function allows the switcher operator to co-ordinate with camera operator via PC headsets or iPhone-compatible headphones. By embedding microphone audio into channels 15 and 16 of the camera optical fiber video output, the Talkback function listens to channels 15 and 16 of the optical fiber input on the headphones.

Using the 12V power connection, the converter can be connected to any power source or a car battery. By connecting the switcher’s program output to the ATEM Camera Converter via optical outputs, the camera converter illuminates the 2 tally LEDs using open standard tally packet in the SDI output. You can select the camera number using the USB software or by camera number button on the keypad. In addition, you can also view red color tally on the monitor by connecting external monitoring to the HDMI/SDI outputs.

Featuring an integrated belt clip, the camera converter can be attached to the belt for portability. With the help of a camera mount, the converter can be mounted onto a tripod. In addition, the camera converter features microphone inputs for audio capability.

Made of aircraft-grade aluminum, the camera converter can withstand bumps and shocks without breaking. Built-in button pad allows you to control power, microphone level, talkback and video, and battery indicators. You can update converters firmware via a USB port. The camera converter can be used for applications such as concerts, sporting events, lecture theaters, houses of worship, surveillance, or any remote camera location.

ATEM Camera Converter is rated 4.1 out of 5 by 7.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very effective tool I use this device in broadcast trucks, to run HD-SDI video from camera to truck over distances longer than would be possible with coax cable. It also handles return IFB, etc., without needing an additional cable. The unit has been useful reliable, and it is robustly built in a compact aluminum chassis. The only significant drawback is that I wish there were options for other types of fiber optic terminations than just LC. ST would be better.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Tremendously useful for multiple applications! Each ATEM Camera Converter can send an HDSDI video and audio feed in both directions simultaneously. I use six of these units to permanently link three campus venues together. Three of them are connected to a BlackMagic Design 12 x 12 router that I can remotely control. The others reside in each venue. This gives the ability to send and receive a full quality HDSDI feed to and from each building. It works flawlessly.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from works as advertised I have 5 of these units on my production truck, they have solved a lot of issues I was having with the limitations of SDI. I have run over 4000 feet of singlemode fiber with no issues. this unit can also be used to convert the HDMI out of a GoPro Hero 3 to SDI, something the other BMD convert boxes have a hard time doing.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Works Good at First but!! This product is great, use in production truck, run tactical fiber with adapters to LC over 1000', but when using in long events like soccer games the units overheat and shutoff video. Maybe BM could put in heatsinks on the processors which might help the overheating.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good product overall Overall it does what we need. There are two things that are frustrating about it. First, you must set its number assignment but what's frustrating is, if you push the camera icon button it immediately changes the number assignment on this unit which eliminates the tally functionality until its corrected. Second, if you currently have the unit connected to your studio converter and you're trying to change the number assignment of this unit, it won't let you. You have to disconnect it, power it off, then back on then hold down the camera icon button for 3 seconds to reset it to #1, then push the button (1 push = 1 number advancement) until you get it reset to the number you need. I wish Blackmagic would enable a feature in the firmware that would allow me to lock the unit to a specific number and make it so that it could only be overridden if I connected it to the Converter software (basically make it so that bumping the camera icon button wouldn't change its number assignment).

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good Product but... These work well, though they could use some better direction and a better headset volume interface. The headset volume only goes up, until it is as high as supported (which could be louder), and then goes back to the lowest setting, and then works it way back up. Needs help. When setting the camera number, we find the button interface impossible to get right. Use the software for this and be done in seconds. Remember when using with an ATEM, the camera number needs to align with the input on the ATEM and not what you may have customized the ATEM to say (like cam 1 being input 5, set the converter to 5, not 1). We use this from some older cameras that have HDMI out only and convert to fiber. The HDMI out is nice too since we have some heads-up displays on the cameras.
