Blackmagic Design ATEM-CONV Overview

The Blackmagic Design ATEM Camera Converter enables extension of SDI (serial digital interface) / HDMI cameras to distances up to 28 miles (45km) via an optical fiber link. You can connect your camera to the SDI/HDMI inputs to convert videos to optical signals. This optical fiber input can be connected to the switcher program feed to convert to SDI/HDMI outputs for monitoring. In addition, the SDI/HDMI outputs can be switched between return program and camera input for monitoring.

With an internal battery, the converter can be used at remote locations when the cameras are placed at far-off locations. Featured Talkback function allows the switcher operator to co-ordinate with camera operator via PC headsets or iPhone-compatible headphones. By embedding microphone audio into channels 15 and 16 of the camera optical fiber video output, the Talkback function listens to channels 15 and 16 of the optical fiber input on the headphones.

Using the 12V power connection, the converter can be connected to any power source or a car battery. By connecting the switcher’s program output to the ATEM Camera Converter via optical outputs, the camera converter illuminates the 2 tally LEDs using open standard tally packet in the SDI output. You can select the camera number using the USB software or by camera number button on the keypad. In addition, you can also view red color tally on the monitor by connecting external monitoring to the HDMI/SDI outputs.

Featuring an integrated belt clip, the camera converter can be attached to the belt for portability. With the help of a camera mount, the converter can be mounted onto a tripod. In addition, the camera converter features microphone inputs for audio capability.

Made of aircraft-grade aluminum, the camera converter can withstand bumps and shocks without breaking. Built-in button pad allows you to control power, microphone level, talkback and video, and battery indicators. You can update converters firmware via a USB port. The camera converter can be used for applications such as concerts, sporting events, lecture theaters, houses of worship, surveillance, or any remote camera location.

Blackmagic Design ATEM-CONV Reviews

Does not handle/transmit 4k despite B&H 4k search filter

I bought 2 of these units to transmit 4k video since it came up when I selected 4k in B&Hs search filters but be warned...this unit does not transmit/accept 4k. I called Black Magic and they confirmed the highest resolution this unit can handle is 2k.  Disappointed.

Good product overall

Overall it does what we need. There are two things that are frustrating about it. First, you must set its number assignment but what's frustrating is, if you push the camera icon button it immediately changes the number assignment on this unit which eliminates the tally functionality until its corrected. Second, if you currently have the unit connected to your studio converter and you're trying to change the number assignment of this unit, it won't let you. You have to disconnect it, power it off, then back on then hold down the camera icon button for 3 seconds to reset it to #1, then push the button (1 push = 1 number advancement) until you get it reset to the number you need. I wish Blackmagic would enable a feature in the firmware that would allow me to lock the unit to a specific number and make it so that it could only be overridden if I connected it to the Converter software (basically make it so that bumping the camera icon button wouldn't change its number assignment).

Can I use this to send my HDMI camera to my ATEM ...

Can I use this to send my HDMI camera to my ATEM TV Pro HD switcher while also: 1. Using Talkback via the SDI IN. 2. Receiving Tally via the SDI in monitored on the HDMI out to an external monitor? Would the external monitor receive Program video or the Camera input feed?
Asked by: Nathan
The Camera Converter is not compatible with the Television Studio HD. It is a fiber connected device. The HDMI inputs do not support Talkback. You could use the Mini Converter Optical Fiber and connect to inputs 5-8. This would provide talkback, tally and talkback. Your remote monitor could get Program at the Camera Converter.
