Manfrotto MVR901EC Reviews
I am not happy this is the best LANC controller available
I have tried them all - from the cheapies all the way up to the top-of-the price line. The only one that came close was the VariZoom Rock model. Compared to that one, this one has a way better feeling rocker switch that is both variable depending on how far you move the switch, but also adjustable with a side wheel. The focus, AF button, record and power button all work flawlessly on my Canon XF605. Here are my pros/cons. Pros Rocker switch works well and is smooth out of the box and ready to go without any calibration All buttons work Handle attachment is decent and the rubber pads on both sides keeps the controller tight without slipping Coiled cord is nice and keeps things tidy, and is replaceable Cons The entire thing is made out of rubber-coated plastic. I have had many similar Manfrotto parts that simply break apart or get all gummy over time The rocker switch is a tiny component inside and would not survive much abuse The rocker speed control wheel is abysmally small and difficult to adjust with anything but the tiniest of fingertips The cord is too short for many setups The price is ridiculous for what it is, especially given that it is not rugged enough to be an actual 'pro' model If it were made out of metal and maybe had a very rugged rocker switch, it would be perfect. I wish Canon would step up and offer such a basic controller, no doubt making it much more rugged. The ability to adjust zoom slowly while following action and not having to drape your hand up over the camcorder's control is key. For that, this thing is worth it. But I do feel like Manfrotto is very much pro-sumer rather than professional.
Works perfect with the Sony PXW-z90v
I have this attached to an Sachtler Activ6 / Flowtech tripod. You can find my video on YouTube. Long story short, if you want nice smooth control of zoom while panning, there's no better way to do it that with this controller.
