Westcott Apollo Strip overview

  • 1Description

The narrow profile of Wescott's 16 x 30" Apollo Strip makes it an ideal rim, hair light or accent light. The recessed front edge of the box provides a degree of directionality while the output remains soft and flattering. Alternatively, if you need a harder light simply remove the front diffuser. Since the Apollo Strip is built on an umbrella frame, it provides for quick setup and equally quick break-down. The Apollo Strip mounts vertically or horizontally to suit your subject.

    Westcott Apollo Strip reviews

    Apollo Strip 16 x 30" (40.6 x 76.2 cm) is rated 4.2 out of 5 by 30.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good, but over-priced Too much $$$ for what it is. But what it is does the job, and seems well made. For me it is multi use. Will work with the Einstein 604's but maybe not so much with other larger strobes. Will work nicely with up to 3 speedlights. Will work with flourescent lights. (not going to try with incandescent-heat) So it is versatile. Would be better as a stripbox if a little longer. Would have bought a second, except somebody in Calgary had black friday stripboxes. Strictly strobe, but what I need. Like the versatility. Like that I can use with speedlights on location, or as an extra in the studio.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Apollo strip and 43in Octa work togeher I have just purchased these 2 soft boxes to use. The light distribution and quality is superb. I am using them with my 580ex Canon flashes. I've shot 3 portrait sessions with them and am very glad that I have them. I found that have to use a short horizontal extention on your light stand in order to tilt the strip box. There is not enough adjustment room in the box unless you do. The Octa works fine on a boom stand. I use the Pocket Wizard system to control the lights. So once set up you just shoot.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Works as advertised! Great product for the studio. Wescott's Apollo line can function on location as well, but make sure they are double sandbagged. My one complaint is the silver lining material starts to flake off the more you open and close them, resulting in being covered in glitter, which can make your clients think you just left the strip club, not closed your strip box.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Eye-Opening Modifier One thing I didn't realize about strip boxes until trying this one; since they offer soft light on the long dimension and harder light on the short, they can be used to reveal texture in one dimension only. That's useful. Perhaps even more so than their excellence for rim-lighting. Makes me wish there were more size options, but this one is proving fairly versatile. The box is well-designed, much more compact than rigid-panel versions. Easy to assemble, but since the umbrella rod isn't full-length, you need to insert it in the collar every time you assemble it. A bit of a pain, but still much better than rigid boxes. Durability is an open question, and the only reason I didn't go with 5 stars. Haven't used it long enough to know if it'll last. I hope so, because I love this bloody thing.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy Light Control I bought 2 of these strip boxes to use instead of umbrellas to better control the direction of light and prevent spillover onto the background. The umbrella style made it quick and easy to setup. The light quality was excellent. I bought the Apollo stripbox because of its recessed diffusion panel which minimizes light spread compared to other boxes with flush front panels. Used with an SB-910 speedlight there was plenty of light coverage for a full length body shot. Note that since the speedlights are inside the stripbox the infrared triggering system on most camera may not always function. I used radio triggers to fire one light and set the other flash up for optical triggering (SU-4 mode) which worked great.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nice softbox This is my first softbox. Very easy to install. I love the way it folds up. I also love the soft light. Tilting it, since the stand goes inside the softbox, doesn't allow for a lot of tilt. Also, a bit tricky trying to get it installed on the umbrella mount.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great softbox for flashes Works well. It's nice having a softbox for my flashes. The construction is kind of flimsy but it holds its shape well enough. Only 4 stars simply because it's no as robust as a softbox with a speed ring. But this set up is much lighter. My one complaint is the zippers make it hard to tilt the flash up and down, simply because the stand sits inside the soft box. Produces beautiful directional light tho.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Worked great until it broke I bought two of these to use as rim lights - the ease of set-up and light quality is really nice. But, sadly, after using the Strip only a few times (inside, stored in the packing box, no abnormal wear and tear) one of the ribs broke and can't be fixed. This is really disappointing as I live in Bangkok and had bought this specially from B&H and transported here. I can't find these in this city.
