    Oben VH-R2 reviews

VH-R2 Tilt Head for Monopods is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 207.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from 90 degree tilt problem modification I had read the reviews, especially the 6-12-12 review regarding the inability to have a full 90 degree tilt. I went and purchased this head anyway. It is a great head but is see the tilt problem discussed and was able to reslove it. I set the mounting screw about 2 thread higher then being fully seated and then place a common flat washer between the mounting plate and monopod. It is securre and does not interfer with its performance. Now the head clears the plate and I get a full 90 degree tilt. The true test of the head will come when I use it on my upcoming safari vacation.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very sturdy, great value I received a free Oben monopod with a purchase of a Canon 5dIII. I really thought the monopod was great taking long range shots using my 100-400mm Canon lens so I decided to get this VH-R2 Head. I took it out this past weekend to shoot Pelicans diving for food. The Oben Head worked great allowing me to manual focus the 100-400mm lens with the Canon 2X converter while I followed the birds through the camera on the monopod. The head was attached to the lens and it was very stable. In addition, I can carry the camera/lens combination with the monopod attached and the camera stays very tightly attached to the head. I love it. You can't beat the price either.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect for a small camcorder This head only has vertical motion, but with a monopod, that sufficient. It allows you to set the angle appropriately if you are shooting from uphill or downhill from your subject. It also smooths out vertical panning. A horizontal pan motion on a monopod head is silly. You can hold the monopod vertical when panning up and down, but it is harder to prevent the monopod from turning, so this heads action works well. The quick release is also nice. The plate is small enough that it doesn't block the battery release on my Sony NX30, and it's secure. The QR mechanism is a bit odd, but works fine, so I can't even complain about that.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not a good monopod head I purchased the VH-R2 tilt head based on OBEN's reputation and B&H's recommendation. It did not live up to the OBEN reputation for quality, and I wonder why B&H would recommend it. The tilt function did not work well. It required a lot of effort to tighten the head to hold it in place, then was very hard to loosen up when necessary to make adjustments. I returned it and got an OBEN BA-117T tilt head to replace it--which brings me to my disappointment with B&H. When I realized that the VH-R2 was a waste of money, I looked for a replacement. I found a B&H video on OBEN monopods and monopod heads that recommended the BA-117T tilt head for use with OBEN monopods. I don't know why they would recommend the VH-R2 head as the head of choice for GITZO and OBEN monopods, when their OBEN monopod video recommends the BA-117T.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Safety attach. Quick On & Off. Smooth bought together with the Oben monopod. Highly recommend this as a package deal. Safety catch to prevent losing the camera when removing is very nice. Quick on and off. Using with a Sling bag. Carries the monopod with swivel attached on side of Lowepro 202 AW, Once the monopod with swivel head is in my left hand, grabbing the camcorder with the right hand is easy. Smooth release with the thumb on the head, insert camcorder... snap down to close and latch it securing. The whole move is about 4 seconds. Perfect for what I needed working alone. Bubble level is nice, but not really needed with video using LED to frame shots

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very Nice I just received this today along with my Manfrotto 681B monopod. It is very substantial, actually more heavy duty feeling than I thought it would be. I have mounted it onto the monopod and it screws on very nicely without any adapter. I mounted my Canon 5D Mark III with 70-200mm F2.9L and it supports it well. Nice smooth movement of the ball head. It took me a minute to figure out the quick release on the bracket, but it is very intuitive after that. I have not used it in the field for my sports work yet, but will update when I do.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Not 100% Confident in Mounting Head to Monopod The overall quality of the product is fine. However, I wanted to use this Head on a 30-year-old, very heavy metal monopod, primarily with a D800 and 200-500 Nikon zoom. Try as I might, I could not seem to get a truly secure attachment into the base of the head with the available length of bolt. It might be just fine, but it's a question of my not having total confidence in the security of the attachment, given the normal amount of movement of the camera system and its torque loads at the attachment point.....and in this case perception is as strong as reality. I will keep this Head for potential use with a lighter weight system.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect Compact Head for Monopod Well constructed compact head, perfect size for monopods. Swivel yoke design allows 180 degree rotation in a single plane. Twin lever locking device allows quick release of mounting plate while preventing accidental release. Threaded insert adapts to either 1/4-20 or 3/8-16 mounting stud on monopod/tripod. Rubberized pad on mounting plate helps prevent twisting on camera.
