Impact VPD-DSBK Overview

Part of the Varidrive system for easy raising and lowering of seamless paper, the Varidrive with Black Chain from Impact has adjustable inserts that tightly grip each side of the various sized seamless paper rolls. The Varidrive is then inserted into hooks like the Impact ME-122, ME-123 or the triple hook VPD-H3W. With the exception of ME-122 which fits in a Super Clamp, the other hook sets are bolted onto the wall.

You can load three rolls for example, onto the VPD-H3W. Each roll requires another Varidrive kit. You can purchase color-coded units to clearly identify which roll you're raising and lowering. The Varidrive can handle seamless rolls measuring up to 9' wide and weighing up to 22 lb. To strengthen large coreless rolls and prevent bowing, Cross Poles (VPC-5) are available from Impact.

Good product to be used with a well thought out system. I wish the chain was metal but is seems sturdy enough for what I need it for.

The plastic chain with this product is not good

the plastic chain is terrible - it comes apart when used - perhaps it is the hot weather here in the Caribbean. Anyway, I am having to order 2 replacements - there should be better quality control - The rollers are fine - I just hope that the new chain will fit them properly

chain keeps breaking

Not sure why but the black chain is brittle and keeps breaking, the red and grey chains are fine. Broke 6 links trying to connect it.

Perfect for the studio

I bought this to replace a Varidrive I broke at a friend's studio. (The Varidrive is well made. It was definitely my fault the piece broke.) The plastic chain works but it's clunkier than a metal chain. Otherwise, this works well.

Disappointing.

I've broken 3 of these chains already; they're flimsy, and unless your tension in the paper roll is dialed in perfectly, it's easy to slightly overdo it when pulling, which leads to the chain snapping. To add, it's impossible to buy the change separately from the other hardware. Looking for other solutions.

Weak plastic chain

Plastic chain is a little weak. I broke 2 links already. luckily easy to repair. I also dropped my backdrop with this on it and the force bent the metal rods. I wish the instructions were more helpful. Overall works great

Works well

These work and keep your seamless paper from unrolling. For me, I got a local photographer experienced with similar system to help install. I suppose I could have done it myself, but much less stress to have someone who understands the details. Getting the Varipoles (sold separately) level is absolutely key, and that took a bit of time. Then, measuring the distance between the poles will depend on your seamless size. I use 85 inches in my small space. Overall, took about 90 min with an experienced photographer to help to fully install. Be sure to pull the chain slowly...very slowly. System seems sturdy, but slow is better for rolling and unrolling. And..you need to gently check the poles every so often to be sure they haven't moved or shifted.

In the first use, I broke the chain.

Is this works with savage port A stand?
Asked by: Safwan
I think it would be awkward at best. These work best on a bracket anchored to the wall. That said, if you mounted the bracket to the stands it could conceivably work, but it'd be wobbly

question

What is the final measurements if using a 107 roll, or how many inches does it stick out of the paper roll on each side?
Asked by: bryan b.
The Varidrives stick out about 4 inches. So add four inches to each side of the background.

I bought the 140"x150' savage paper, I also bought a set of baby hooks for an expan drive to mount to c-stands,will also be using an ALU-Core, these rolls are 100 pounds, should I be confident with this set up holding the weight?
Asked by: Thomas
No. I'm not sure the ALU-Core will even do anything. These drives are all plastic. You would be better off just using the ALU-Core in my opinion. I found the roll flexing a lot in the center and the drives underperforming. I ended up unrolling a ton of the paper to make everything lighter. I hope this helps.

question

I like this design style but it is too weak. Is there any company that makes this exact thing except out of metal? I have had multiple mounts like this but they have all broke. I need something stronger (with a metal chain)

Do these work with vinyl backdrops? I have the ...

Do these work with vinyl backdrops? I have the wall mounted hooks and 96" rolls of vinyl but have not been able to unroll them more than halfway before the entire roll's weight unravels the entire roll almost ripping it off its core. The chain links have snapped multiple times as well and just don't seem sturdy enough to work unless I have something set up incorrectly.
Asked by: Sophia
For vinyl I would use the metal change. And I would not go larger than the width you are using now because the foll becomes too heavy for the drives. You must use both sides of the chain to have a controlled lowering of vinyl because it is heavier. Holding both sides of the loop of chain should keep it from spinning uncontrollably off the cardboard roll. We do not sell the Impact chain on it's own but the Manfrotto 091MCG Metal Chain for Expan Drive, Gray 11.5' (3.5 m) BH #MA091MCG will work on your Impact drives and should not break,

question

is it compatible with (Manfrotto Manfrotto Background Baby Hooks) ??
Asked by: Alaa
Yes, the Manfrotto Background Baby Hooks work with Expan Drives and the Impact Varidrives. For safety I highly recommend using a heavy sand bag on each stand leg. When you unroll the paper background it pulls forward at the same time and you need the weight to help prevent it from falling over.
