There are few bags made to fit 17 laptops. This could use a little more padding around the laptop itself, but it's attractive, roomy, reasonably well-made with good material and stitching, and nicely priced. If you, too, are a screen realestate hog like me, chances are you'll love it!

Plenty of storage and my 17 laptop fits nice and snug. As usual B&H came through. Good price and fast delivery.

Would you recommend using an additional laptop case/sleeve with this, or does the laptop compartment provide sufficient stability/protection for a thinner laptop?

For laptops how much protection is required is a matter of how you care for your laptop and risk tolerance. In most cases this should be fine.

Just purchase a new ASUS ROG 18" STRIX SCAR (dim: 15.71 x 11.57 x 1.21"). Bag options appear limited. Will it fit in this bag?

The Laptop compartment for the Mobile Edge The ECO Messenger Bag (Olive), B&H # MOMECME9, can fit devices up to 16.8" x 11" x 2". It would not be able to accomodate the ASUS ROG 18" STRIX SCAR (dim: 15.71 x 11.57 x 1.21").
