Acratech 1170 overview

  • 1Description

The Large Leveling Base from Acratech is similar to the company's other Leveling Bases, but with a larger-diameter surface (2.9"/74mm) to ensure that its spirit level will be readable even with larger heads mounted to its 3/8"-16 stud.

Allowing 10° of movement in any direction, the Large Leveling Base has a 3/8"-16 thread at its bottom for mounting on professional tripods.

This Large Leveling Base is especially useful for creating stitched panoramic images that require an absolutely level base for your ball head.

Large Leveling Base is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 26.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Best match with RRS Pano head. I use this with a RRS pano head screwed directly on top for ... shooting panos. I got the Large size because I wanted to make sure I had highest visibility of the bubble - and I'm glad I made that decision. With a Gitzo 0 series tripod with minimal leg extension, this is my backpacking setup. Pluses: Bubble is very accurate; bubble is large and easy to see small changes; setup is much faster and more accurate than leveling with legs. Minuses: Movement is not silky smooth like a good ballhead, or like a video-type leveling base. There is a slight shift when you lock it down - I've gotten used to this, but that is the reason it did not get 5 stars.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Exactly What I Needed This leveling base is well made, light weight and does exactly what I needed. I recently bought a fluid head that has a bubble level. But I found that trying to level the head just by using the tripod leg adjustments was a large pain and was mostly trial and error. The bubble level on the head was small and you have to view it from an angle due to it's placement, so it's effectively useless. This Acratech large leveling base has a much larger bubble that protrudes well away from under the fluid head, making it much easier for my old eyes to see. The range of adjustment is more than enough and it locks down tight without any movement while tightening. Well done.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good Leveling Device ! I am using this for Panorama shooting. I was using Manfrotto Leveling but it was too bulky. This one is small and easy to use. Couple of things you should know before purchase. It only level +-10Deg not 15 like the others. The top and the bottom plate has large cut-outs. This is, sometimes, problem when you lock these plate by screw. Otherwise, It is light and small enough and do the job!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Stable platform for heavy cameras Perfect to use with the panoramic head which I use for about anything from DSLR to large format 4x5. Nothing moves once the screw is tightened. Quite light, too, for what it does.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Typical Acratech! No I dont own stock in Acratech, I buy a piece at a time. The engineering, fit and finish is typical of all Acratech products. Pricey? Yep. But is it a good value? Absolutely! Regardless of fit, aesthetics and price, their products just work for me. I'm so over trying to level a tripod head by adjusting individual legs and it easy holds all of the gear in the photo without any slippage. All of this is perched atop an Induro CT414....another work horse. I originally purchased the standard size, but the azimuth mount on my star tracker has a larger base, so I returned it to B&H for an exchange as they were the same price. This leveling base makes polar aligning much easier as you can rotate the azimuth mount to point to north without turning the tripod. BTW...all of the gear shown in the photo came from B&H. Selection and superb customer service. I only shop at B&H.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Solid Base I placed this on my Gitzo 3 Series tripod and mounted my RRS BH-55 ball head to it. This setup should enable me to correct for any uneven tripod setup. The head is solidly built, fits the RRS BH-55 perfectly. I do wish that the Acratech leveling base had more than a 10 degree leveling correction.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Ahigh quality product work very penny I should have bought this leveling base sooner. Most of what I shoot is with the camera level or doing multi shot panoramas. This is so much more of an efficient way of setting up and getting the camera level. Works easily with the built in leveling feature of newer cameras. While not a total substitute for a traditional ball head this is the way to go if keeping the camera level is of primary importance. For the extra $20 for the slightly larger platform version I feel I future proofed my purchase in case I want to use a video head at some time.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Using on Gimbal Head Makes setting up easy. Only have to get tripod close and the rest with this. Using with a custom bracket gimbal head and 600mm f4
