Acratech Large Leveling Base
Key Features
  • 74mm Diameter Surface for Larger Heads
  • Spirit Level
  • Supports Up to 25 lb
  • 3/8"-16 Thread & Screw
The Large Leveling Base from Acratech is similar to the company's other Leveling Bases, but with a larger-diameter surface (2.9"/74mm) to ensure that its spirit level will be readable even with larger heads mounted to its 3/8"-16 stud.

Allowing 10° of movement in any direction, the Large Leveling Base has a 3/8"-16 thread at its bottom for mounting on professional tripods.

This Large Leveling Base is especially useful for creating stitched panoramic images that require an absolutely level base for your ball head.

Does it work with a tripod that has 3/8-16 thread sized base?
Asked by: Surendranath
The Acratech Large Leveling Base has a 3/8-16 female mount on the bottom and most tripod legs use a 3/8-16 male stud. So if your tripod has a 3/8-16 male stud, it will fit the Acratech Large Leveling Base as well as most other level bases.

The Really Right Stuff BH-55 Ball Head with Full-Size Lever-Release Clamp would work great with the Acratech Large Leveling Base.

question

Still trying to get my hands around. Would this make sense for ball head tripod heads at all? Or is it mostly for pan and tilt heads?
Asked by: Albert
The Leveling Base works perfectly with a ballhead. It allows you to level the base of the ballhead and then you can level the to top of the ball so that when you pan the base you are perfectly level. This is necessary if you want to shoot panoramic images.

question

My camera has a virtual horizon built in. Do I need this product?
Asked by: George M.
If you plan on doing any type of shots that require level panning then you need to mechanically level the camera on top of the tripod/head setup. The virtual horizon only tells you that the camera is level when static. If you have the camera set up on tripod legs and a head on ground that is not level then as soon as you start panning you lose the level. Check out some you tube videos on leveling bases any some of them show you a visual representation of this how the camera loses level on the panning axis.
