Lensbaby Edge 80 overview

  • 1Description

The Lensbaby Edge 80 Optic is an 80mm f/2.8-22 flat field optic with an adjustable 12-blade aperture. This optic is specifically designed to be used in conjunction with a Lensbaby lens body to give you a slice of sharp focus, surrounded by soft blur. The size of the in-focus region varies depending on the aperture and the location of it can be modified by the degree and direction of tilt. The selective focus effect produced is especially desirable for close-up photography, as this lens can focus as close as 17" / 43.2cm when fully extended.

This optic is composed of 5 multi-coated glass elements within 4 groups and the 12 rounded aperture blades produce an extremely smooth bokeh. It is compatible with the Lensbaby Composer Pro, Composer, Muse, Scout, and Control Freak lens bodies (Not compatible with the Composer with Tilt Transformer for Micro Four Thirds and Sony NEX cameras).

When used in conjunction with a Lensbaby lens body, this optic can provide a controllable sliver of focus surrounded by a smooth, out of focus border.
Size of selective focus region is controlled by the aperture; location of the region can be modified by tilting the lens.
Rounded 12-blade aperture creates a smooth bokeh and is controlled by a dial on the front of the optic.
Focus as close as 17" / 43.2cm when lens is fully extended, in macro mode, and tilted.
Compatible with the Lensbaby Composer Pro, Composer, Muse, Scout, and Control Freak lens bodies (Not compatible with the Composer with Tilt Transformer for Micro Four Thirds and Sony NEX cameras).
46mm front filter threads allow compatibility with Lensbaby Macro Converters, but do not work with 37mm accessories.

    Lensbaby Edge 80 reviews

Edge 80 Optic is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 26.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great effects I love this optic. The first thing I noticed was it's weight, it felt as if it had substance and balance. I also appreciate the ease of changing the aperture on the optic, and the look of the images I taken with this optic. It is easy to put the Edge 80 into the composer, but I have found swapping out is a bit difficult. It feels too tight and the first couple of times I was afraid it was stuck.I love the effect of the tilt Lensbaby optics give the images and I appreciate the effect the process has had to slow me down and really work to achieve the look I want instead of shooting multiple shots quickly and moving on.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best optic yet! This is the lens I've been wishing for for years! I've been a lensbaby enthusiast since they first came out, and have owned several generations. I currently shoot with a composer and own the double glass, plastic and fisheye optics. The moment this one was released I knew I had to have it, and after shooting with it for a few weeks I can honestly say it has actually improved my shooting. I love that I have to step back and THINK about what I am doing and really compose and focus my shot. The out of focus areas have a wonderful dreamy look that I just love. The lens itself is very well made, and I love that I can change the aperture on the fly - no more magnets! Best optic ever from lensbaby.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Lensbaby flat field 80mm optic This is a flat field optic (no sweet spot) which allows variable focus over the entire field of the image. At 80mm it works well for unusual portraits, with creative focus out of the camera, and also for other sorts of selective focus techniques. Automatic functions are not available and no data are passed between lens and camera. Accordingly, aperture information will not be recorded with the picture. There is something of a learning curve here as it is not intuitively like conventional lenses.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nice edge blur I owned the Velvet 56 and the Sweet 50. The best part of this lens are the focal length: 80, which is best for portraits (less distortions), and the edge blur which gives you a straight edge blur. One problem I found with the Sweeet 50 is the type of blur it has. It's radial/circular and sometimes it looks artificial. The blur of the Edge 80 seems to be more natural and perfect with portraits and fashion.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Magnificent lovely optic well made (lensbaby standards). make sure you look up the instructions on removing it. It is quite different from the other optics. lovely optic with beautiful OOF rendition and clean and crisp selective focus areas. the built in macro mode is nice too.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from All it is advertised to be I bought this lens specifically for the miniaturization effect you can get with a tilt-n-shift lens but without the hefty price tag. I was not disappointed. After a couple dozen shots or so I was able to get the desired effect. This seemed to work best with objects that are in the distance. The lens is a light compared to other lenses I use and the manual focusing wasn't a problem until small apertures are used. The image can get kind of dim. As manual settings are required. The TTL light metering is inaccurate. The macro focusing ring is nice as well. The only reason it didn't get 5 stars are two things:1) Build design. I'm using this with a Lensbaby Composer Pro. The process for swapping it with other Lensbaby products is a little nerve wracking. I thought I was going to accidentally rip the thing out of the Composer. Considering what a bargain the lens is I may just get another Composer body and leave it permanently attached.2) With a 1.6x factor on small frame cameras, this is really a 128mm lens. I knew this before buying it. Its just a prime focus lens when it comes down to it. Composition may be tricky.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great for portraits This lens is great for portraits. The selective focus can guide the viewer to the spot you want in focus which is great when you have your models face in focus and blur out any distracting elements in the background. A slight tilt can create a background of abstract color that can make your subject pop out in the photo. I am looking forward to using the miniature effect that I have seen others use with this lens. It's nice being able to change apertures without having to remove an aperture disk.
