I just lost this hood last night working a wedding. it really wasn't that good locking into my lens, any other better/cheaper suggestions?
Unfortunately there are not any better options that we have to offer you in this particular instance. None of our 3rd party options will fit better or more securely than this one does.

Why is this tulip (i.e., scalloped) and not flat? ??It makes using hand held Neutral Density filters a real pain (while using the hood). ??A flat hood would seem to shield the lens better from sun flare (esp. at dawn/dusk). ??Are there any 3rd partyhoods that are flat (I'd give up the nice Canon lock for a better/flat shield)?
To add to Colin's answer... since the aspect ratio of a 35mm camera is not 1x1, the corners are closer to the edge than the rest of the frame, hence the tulip shape. Therefore corners have less protection from outside light.

Will this lens hood fit into the first version of the 24-70mm?
I doubt that it will fit as the 2nd version is a larger mm lens than the first.
