Westcott 2472 overview

  • 1Description

This is a Westcott 40° Fabric Grid for the 43" Apollo Orb softbox. The grid narrows the beam spread from your Apollo softbox to control spill light, softens contrast and add directionality to this soft source. The large surface area and unique shape of the orb allows wrap-around light effects, while the grid helps to prevent contamination of your carefully lit background. It attaches to the recessed front through the use of hook and loop tape.

Create Separation and Depth
Grids are made up of cells that control off axis light in four directions while maintaining the soft quality inherent in a large light source. Use as a portrait source to keep light off your background. Or use the grid's control qualities to turn the orb into a large hairlight for groups. You can even clip gels to it.
Eliminates Spill and Flare
As light is focused into a forward direction through use of a grid, it can help to eliminate spill light or lens flare
40 Degree Spread of Light.
The off axis portion of the light is controlled by the cell size. The cell size (measured in degrees) describes the maximum cutoff angle of the off axis light. A 40-degree grid is the most popular degree used
Light Loss
Light loss at the center axis is minimal at a distance of up to 3 to 4 times the diagonal dimension of the light source. On most models it is less than a 1/4 of stop of light.
Perfect for Travel
Soft grids collapse down for easy transport and travel
Included Travel Case
Each unit comes with an included nylon carry case
Easy Attachment
Grids easily attach through the use of hook and loop tape. When attaching, place your diffusion panel about 1/2 way in on the hook tape. This will leave enough room for the egg crate to attach directly in front of the diffusion panel
Perfect Fit
Grid corners are left unattached in order to provide the perfect fit. This allows you to stretch the grid taught and avoid sagging or drooping.

40 Degree Fabric Grid for the 43" Apollo Orb is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 46.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Does what it's supposed to do The 40 degree grid does a good job of controlling light spill, which is what it is designed to do. It attaches easily to the Orb, as the velcro tape is wide enough to accommodate both the diffusion cloth as well as the grid. The only problem I've encountered is the fact that flash settings cannot be changed easily with the grid cloth attached, requiring instead that the flash be reached from underneath, through the zippered slots in the Orb. You probably cannot see the flash LCD under these conditions. Of course, if your flash supports commands from the camera or selected radio triggers (e.g. Radio Poppers), this isn't an issue.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Grid-ness First I must say I have had a Wescott Apollo Orb for over a year now and love it so much I purchased a second and bought grids for both. With the grids on I use them for side lighting and because the Orbs are wide I use nylon fabric to cut the down to how much light I need. The grids are nicely made as all my Wescott products are. They will add a little (not much) weight to your light stand so if you weren't using a sandbag (and you should always) you will now. I have to say for side lighting these grids are so much more affordable than grids for strip boxes. With a little fabric to cut the light you can easily turn Orbs into 12x36 stip lights.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Essential upgrade for the Orb I use it when I want to narrow the degree of light on a subject (typically men and/or women with narrow, defined faces). Comes on and off with ease. little fussy at the corners until you get the hang of it and the carrying case's opening is a bit narrow.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Almost too heavy for the Orb while the orb's setup is super simple. its lightweight construction almost doesn't hold up the grid. I would say the grid is actually constructed better than the umbrella. came in a nice storage bag. although I can;t figure how to fold it back up to get in there again.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Grid to Control the Light I have used this grid modifier with the original octabank. I love I it can control the light for not spilling out and everywhere. It did take some time to attach it the first time because it comes with velcro yet once you do this few times it's very easy to attach it. The only thing why I could have give it a 4 starts but didn't is I wish it could come with a pouch that you can put it away when not using it. Overall its a great modifier and I definatly recommend it for other.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Takes your lighting to a new level. Fun to experiment with. Folds up neatly and fits into supplied bag. Attaches via Velcro to front of 43 Apollo Orb. Takes your lighting control to the next level. Stunning results using feathering techniques. Over a dozen new ways to control light and create more dramatic pictures. Just Google using grids with softbox for lots of cool ideas. I wish I would have purchased a softbox with a grid years earlier. Well worth the extra cost over standard umbrellas.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from 40 Degree Fabric Grid for the 43 Apollo I use the 43 Orb and Grid in a studio shooting still life and Models. I like the dramatic affects I get when I manipulate the light around my subject and background, I am happy I purchased the Ord and the grid and also a beauty dish to top it all off. I use a PhotoFlex 650 Mono light along with a couple of Canon 580EXII speedlites, some Pocket Wizard III's firing from a Canon 5D Mk 3. Great buy! John I

Rated 4 out of 5 by from ... the jury is still out The grid is heavy for the orbs' structure and distorts the shape - definitely not even close to what the image here shows, but it works as intended and the catchlights don't really notice the distorted orb. It packs nicely and is very portable. A little finicky to install and would be a royal pain if you had to manually adjust light settings without a remote trigger/receiver.
