FEISOL PB-70 overview

  • 1Description

Properly stitching a set of panoramic images to produce a super-sized panorama or VR movie requires, among other things, a completely level horizon line. To obtain that result, this Fiesol PB-70 Panning Base is extremely useful. It has fine micro-adjustments to help you achieve a precise horizontal plane in your images. The base can be inserted between a Fiesol Standard or Tournament tripod and its head so that it fits seamlessly into your camera support system.

    FEISOL PB-70 reviews

PB-70 Panning Base is rated 4.9 out of 5 by 41.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from It does what it says! I have one of the most complicated collection of heads for use with my Manfrotto tripod(s). A leveling base, a panning head, and a Custom Bracket swiveling system. All of those things and I couldn't get this monstrosity of unit to simply PAN! Of course, the panning systems available to me were all 'panoramic' specialty heads with a price tag right in line with 'specialty' products. After some aggressive searching I found this great little number. I had very little expectations based on the price, but guess what?! It does what it says! Trust me, I didn't want to like this product - I'm a label lover and the thought that my other 'label' manufacturers couldn't come up with something this practical is still beyond me! Nice work FEISOL.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great addition I have one of Manfrotto's best monopods, but I always thought it would be nice to allow the head to pan, if I choose, instead of leaving that function to the ball joint near the bottom of the 'pod. Presto! By adding this well-machined little beauty just beneath the video head, I now have that option. It's built very solidly, with some comforting weight behind it, and because the monopod is no lightweight, this little bit of added heft is fine with me. Pans are smooth and steady after adjusting the tightening knob . Very impressed with the unit in particular, and Feisol in general. The price is attractive as well!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works for what I need I purchased this so I could place it between my tripod and an equatorial wedge for an astronomy DSLR mount. I wanted to be able to pivot the wedge to point to the celestial pole without moving my tripod. Additionally, it allows me to move my tripod so the legs provide more stability where I need it (based on the wedge angle and location). This does just that for me.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Does exactly what it's designed to do The PB-70 is beautifully made and does exactly what it's supposed to do, with no slop or free play anywhere. Panning is very smooth and the lock is good and tight. Construction is very solid and I have no doubt it will outlast me. The rest of this review probably falls in the more info than you wanted category. The PB-70 is intended to go inbetween your tripod legs and tripod head, and it is threaded accordingly: 3/8-16 female on the bottom, and 3/8-16 male on top. But that isn't how I want to use it. I want to put it underneath the quick release clamp of my ball head, to give me double panning capability a la Arca Swiss. For that use the threads are exactly the opposite of what I need. I could just turn the PB-70 upside down, but I'm trying to do this cleanly. I looked inside to see what I needed to do. The PB-70 comes apart after removing the three philips screws on the bottom, all of which were loose. Both the top and bottom 'body' pieces are threaded with 3/8-16 thru holes. The bottom one is left empty to attach to the tripod legs, and on the top there is a 3/8-16 bolt (strangely, with a 13mm hex head) threaded in from underneath, leaving about 4 threads protruding from the top to mount your head on. If I could remove that bolt from the top and put it in the bottom, I'd have what I want. Unfortunately, the bolt appears to have been installed with Loctite or equivalent, because all my efforts to remove it have failed. I'm reluctant to disassemble the PB-70 any further, and the standard cure for Loctite, a torch, is out of the question what with all the grease inside. So I'll use it upside down. The alternative is to use something like the Manfrotto 120DF gender changer on top (PB-70 plus 120DF would make roughly a 2 tall stack under the QR plate) and a bolt or stud on the bottom, and I may end up doing that so I can read the degree scale on the PB-70, but for the time being I'll just use it upside down.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from The best pano head for the money What I wanted was a, light weight, 360 pano head, with a locking devise, that I could attach to my camera for use in a vertical stance. I picked this product because I though it would be just what I needed. It was the least expensive pano head I could find with the features I needed most. When I got it I opened the box up and was very impressed with how small and lightweight it was. The rotating head worked very smoothly and the locking screw was nice and big so I could grab it with my big fingers without feeling I was going to break it the first time I used it. This was the perfect pano head until I tried to put it to use on my camera. It had a -20 screw instead of the 3/8-16 that is standard for all tripods.Looking back on the B & H site I saw the error I made. The product information clearly stated that this pano head only came with the -20 screw. This was not a good thing because I didn't want to repack it for a return plus the other pano heads I saw on B & H and other sites that had the features I needed for this head where way more expensive (like add another $ to the price tag).I was not ready to give up this head so I decided to take it apart and see if there was a way to fix this problem. As soon as I got it opened I discovered, first how well made this pano head is, and second how easy it was going to be to fix this very small problem. All I needed to do was change the 1/4 -20 screw out and add a Stainless Steel 1/4 to 3/8 Tripod Adapter/Bushing. Once I did that I just added a 3/8-16 tripod screw and the pano head was ready for use.It now works perfect and for a lot less money then the other pano heads. Thanks B & H.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very Useful for Panoramas I bought this in order to get degree markings to make taking large panoramas easier and it absolutely does the job. It might not have the detent rings but it does the job for a tenth of the price of other panorama setups. The 3/8th screw allows you to attach your own ballhead on top of it which makes adapting it to your current tripod setup very easy.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Simple and well made I purchased the PB-70 to use on my Manfrotto 055 XPRO tripod with a Manfrotto 561BHDV video head that came with my monopod. I now have the ability to swap and change my video head from monopod to tripod for less .It has exceptional build quality and is incredibly smooth with a large easy to use locking knob.
