Nikon 28mm f/1.8 overview

  • 1Description

A flexible wide-angle prime, the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 28mm f/1.8G mixes a comfortable, broad field of view with a relatively compact design. A bright f/1.8 maximum aperture excels in difficult light conditions and also affords control over depth of field for isolating subjects. The optical design includes a pair of aspherical elements, which help to suppress distortion and spherical aberrations in order to realize high sharpness, even illumination, and accurate rendering. Also benefitting image quality, both a Nano Crystal Coat and a Super Integrated Coating have been applied to control flare and ghosting for improved contrast and color accuracy. Additionally, complementing the imaging capabilities, a Silent Wave Motor affords fast and precise autofocus performance, along with full-time manual focus override, to benefit both stills and video applications.

Wide-angle 28mm lens is designed for FX-format F-mount cameras, however can also be used with DX models where it provides a 42mm equivalent focal length.
Bright f/1.8 maximum aperture benefits working in low-light conditions and also affords control over depth of field for working with selective focus techniques.
Two aspherical elements are used to reduce spherical aberrations and distortion in order to realize sharp imagery with accurate rendering.
Both a Nano Crystal Coat and a Super Integrated Coating have been applied to individual elements to suppress internal reflections, flare, and ghosting for improved contrast and color accuracy when working in strong lighting conditions.
Silent Wave Motor affords quick, quiet, and precise autofocus performance along with full-time manual focus override. A Rear Focusing System is also used, where only the rear lens group is moved during focusing, to maintain the overall length of the lens during use and to promote faster focusing speeds.
Rounded seven-blade diaphragm promotes a pleasing out of focus quality that benefits the use of shallow depth of field and selective focus techniques.

    Nikon 28mm f/1.8 reviews

    AF-S NIKKOR 28mm f/1.8G Lens is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 111.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great lens! Autofocus is fast. Image quality is fantastic. Wide open it suffers from slight chroma - greenish in hue. If you are photographing a bright white object against a darker background you will see some of this if you pixel-peep along the white edges. This is common on ALL fast lenses, even from some of the best manufacturers in the world. Nevertheless, it's worth mentioning. Contrast is great with this lens. It's lightweight and the focusing ring is simple and easy to use. Build quality is a little sad. Looks like they built it on a budget. But at the end of the day it's a top performer, and I would highly recommend it. Great value for the money!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Sharp Wide Open Out of the box, the lens was back-focusing. I had to calibrate to -12 to get it to focus sharply. Once the lens started focusing properly, I was blown away by the image quality. Even at f 1.8 the lens is sharp. Contrast is a little low wide open, just a bit of clarity and a smidgen of sharpening is all that I need to get images to look superb. At f 2.0 and onward, the images are tack sharp with good micro contrast, great colors, and low distortion. I'm a huge fan of this lens. Its only draw back is that it does not feel like a legacy lens, a lens that will be with you for decades. I hope I can get at least 15 years from this guy.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great lens for the price I am a wedding & editorial photographer, and have used this lens extensively since I purchased it about two months ago for portraits, weddings, action, and general editorial usage. This is a great dance floor lens - focuses fast, is very light, wide focal length captured a lot of action. Also a nice lens for environmental portraits - I don't find it to have much distortion and it is able to focus pretty close (perhaps in the 1 foot range) so it is really versatile. In general, 28 can be a kind of boring length - not wide enough to be really interesting, but I find that to be the case with a 35 as well. This is a great price for this lens, and the 1.8 aperture makes is great for night shooting.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect Lens I do a lot of indoor events and I can use more light than I can get from my 2.8 zooms. This lens is surprisingly sharp at 1.8 and razor sharp by 4.0. A big plus is the small size and weight compared to my Nikkor 24-70 2.8. 28mm is perfect for my use as 24mm is often too wide and 35mm not enough. Much, much better optical perfromance than my older 35 f2.0D. Subject isolation at 1.8 is a big plus also. Very quick focus compared to the 50 1.4G. Affordable compared to the 24/35 1.4s. Hopefully the light weight doesn't compromise reliability.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Cheap feelbuild. Expensive image quality Feels cheap, but I'm happy with the image quality. The wide angle is closer to what I'm looking for and it's pretty sharp while maintaining a shallow DOF and satisfactory bokeh. Plus the minimum focus distance is about 9 inches, so I can get in pretty close. I use my 50mm for shooting club bands and weddings, but the field of view is too tight. I could't decide between the 24mm 1.4 or the 35mm 1.4, both close to $ each. This seems to be a nice happy medium for a third of the price. I have a feeling I'll be using it a lot, but I get a terrible feeling it'll be in the shop a lot.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nice lens for the money I've had this lens for a few weeks now and have taken a few thousand shots with it. This is a solid lens for the price. Great focal length - about the same field of view as your iPhone 4S using a full frame camera. f1.8 allows for very nice separation in a wide(r) lens should you need this. Focuses very close. Focus hunts a bit much under low lighting conditions however. Nice lens for the price. This will be the one I keep on my camera most of the time-it's a lot lighter than the 24-70 zoom or 14-24. Also better focal length for my type of shooting than my 50f1.4D. I would buy it again.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nice fast wide prime Fast focus and renders very nice colorful, contrasty, sharp images. Light weight and reasonably priced considering the excellent performance it delivers. Also nice for shooting video with. I've only used this on a D4 and D600, and would expect the same great performance on a D800, but it might be overkill for older FX bodies or any DX body. This lense is replacing my 16-35 F4 VR because I was never happy with the bulk/weight and distortion from that lense. One very notable attribute of this lense is that your get pointy light stars instead of blobs like on the 16-35.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Super Happy I'm a photographer on the side and this lens absolutely amazing. Because of school restraints, I haven't been able to go out into the woods or mountains and take the landscape shots I want, but I have snapped a few architectural shots in Manhattan over the past month. The focus is dead on and pretty quick in my opinion. It also has the benefit of focusing really close to subjects to the point that it's almost a macro. It's tack sharp all around and I can't seem to notice any distinct distortion. Overall, this lens i perfect prime lens in combination with the 50mm and 85mm f1.8.
