question
Does this come with the 18in extension or is that purchased separately (p/n RD-1219)? Asking because specs state: Standard Reach 6' with standard 18 extension.
The RedWing Head Extension for Boom - 18 B&H # REHE18 would actually be a separate purchase. Please see the image below.

How does the rotation lever near head keep the head in place without clamping?
Unless you are using an extremely large/heavy modifier, the boom will stay in place. There is a nut on the opposite side of the boom that you can tighten to stop the rotation, but this will make it difficult to rotate the light/modifier.

I just bought this boom and it doesn't have a tightening knob to hold it in place, whereas the previous version did. It's impossible to work without tightening the knob, what am I supposed to do? Is there a knob to buy separately?
You can add more weight to the bags and change their position to keep the light balanced where you want it. We do not have a knob for this version but when balanced you should not need one.

What the maximum payload on this boom? How much weight can it hold?
I contacted the manufacturer concerning your inquiry. According to Cambo, they state that the load capacity does not depend on the mechanical strength of the Cambo RD-1200 Redwing Standard Light Boom with Empty Counterweight Bags. It will not break under excessive load. Instead, its load capacity depends on the stand you are using to support it and the amount of counter weight. As long as the set-up is balanced properly, you may pack a lot more on it than the weight of the average light source.
