The ES-52 Lens Hood from Canon is designed to fit the Canon 40mm EF f/2.8mm STM, EF-S 24mm f/2.8 STM, and EF-M 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM lenses. Lens hoods offer protection from unwanted light entering your lens and causing glare, especially when shooting toward your light source. They also offer a degree of physical protection for your lens against accidental bumps.
Contrary to B&Hâs description, this hood does not work with the EF-M 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM Lens. It will thread on to the EF-M 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM Lensâs front but the too-small ID of the hoodâs opening severely vignettes the front element.
I'm using this with the 40mm STM. This does block a bit of the light, but most importantly I use a hood with all my lens for an added layer of protection. Replacing a $20 hood is a lot cheaper than a lens. Also, never buy non-Canon branded hoods. I learned that the hard way, it doesn't fit as well and the material is cheaper if you don't use Canon.
