    Canon ES-52 reviews

ES-52 Lens Hood is rated 3.7 out of 5 by 33.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Either use this hood or UV filter. The ES-52 Hood is light weight but made by metal. So I feel this little hood has very good quality, Even better them L lens hood. I always use UV filter and lens hood to protect my lens. Using UV filter with this hood together on Canon 40mm f2.8 STM is good, Do not cost vignetting. But for a pancake lens, put hood and filter on it together looks like not pancake anymore. So If you want to buy this hood, better not buy UV filter for this lens. if you already bought a UV filter cover your Canon 40mm STM, do not buy this hood. Save your money to buy something else.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Lens Hood for the 40mm Pancake Lens This lens hood is good enough for protection, and marginal for stray light. I use it with a filter making it a little more useful for blocking light from angles near perpendicular to the lens. I bought it mostly for protection from bumps. I think it's useful in that way. Again, this design of lens hood is very shallow, unlike most Canon Hoods. Think this is a necessity for protection, my camera can swing pretty good when bending down. I really like the lens, so I'm protecting.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from OK It's very, very thin, so I wondered how much protection it was going to give to my pancake lens. I screwed the UV filter on the lens and then the lens hood on the filter. It creates some more distance for protection. It is a cheaper lens, so some may wonder why you would even use a hood on it. I do it to prevent oily finger smudges more than anything. Canon really needs to include hoods with their lenses. It's pretty ridiculous that Nikon and Fuji (and probably others) do, but Canon doesn't. Boo Canon.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nicely made Given that the 40mm STM f/2.8 lens does not suffer much from flare to begin with, this hood probably isn't "necessary", but it will at least add some added protection and allow you to shoot a little more into the sun. It only projects 7/32" from the front of the lens, so the size increase is next to nil. I believe it is made of anodized aluminum, but I don't care to scratch it just to find out! It is very well made in any case.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Solid lens hood. This is a pretty decent lens hood, does it's job fairly well, and really nothing to complain about with it. It seems small at first, but it works just like it's supposed to. I like the solid construction and there's no need to remove or install backwards for storage. Once it's on, you kind of forget it's even there. The lens cap attaches perfectly to the lens hood, so there's no issue with protecting the lens during storage.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Don't recommend This is really nothing more than a 52mm metal filter ring without any glass. It screws into the 40mm lens' front filter threads. I recommend you save the money this empty filter ring costs and use your hand, a hat, or some other object to block point light sources and prevent flare.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A worthwhile addition to the lens. Fits the EF 40mm f/2.8 well. Shallow to avoid vignetting. Screws on and can be left permanently in place. A worthwhile addition to the lens.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works great, but possibly unnecessary. The hood easily attaches to the lens, and your lens cap attaches to the hood. It's really quite convenient. Having said that, due to the wide angle of the lens it's designed for and its small size, the hood is extremely small and will only help with blocking light from extremely wide angles. On the positive side, this hood is made of metal and does technically add some protection to your lens.
