Oben BC-126 overview

  • 1Description

The BC-126 Ball Head from Oben is a durable aluminum ball head that features an Arca-type compatible quick-release system. It has a large locking knob with a tension control screw to give you maximum control of the ball, and a separate knob for the 360° panning movement.

The BC-126's multiple knobs enable higher-precision adjustments to the head than are possible with single-lever heads. Taking panoramic photos is simple, for instance, because you can pan a specific number of degrees while keeping the head's tilt position locked. In fact, the BC-126 features degree markings around its circumference to aid in that task. A notch in the ball head allows you to quickly change between portrait and landscape orientation.

The included quick-release plate attaches to your camera via its standard 1/4"-20 screw, and is secured in place with an Arca-type clamp. A locking knob controls the opening and closing of the aluminum clamp simply and reliably. Two safety screws on the bottom of the plate help prevent your camera from accidentally being released when adjusting the plate fore and aft. One bubble level on the clamp, and another on the locking knob, both ensure that your camera will be level with the horizon.

    Oben BC-126 reviews

BC-126 Ball Head is rated 3.7 out of 5 by 13.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from 3 years old and the pan lock has seized I was really hopeful when I got this head. For a while it worked pretty well. Sadly over time the grease has gotten stiffer and the knobs gradually got harder and harder to tighten (and yes, I know how the tension control screw works). I'd left it sitting for a couple of months over the summer and when I took it out to do some work last week I found that the panning knob had completely seized. I could barely pan and I couldn't use the knob to either tighten and lock the pan or to loosen it either. So right now I am sitting here with an expensive ball head with a panning knob stuck....and several months out of warranty. Color me not at all thrilled.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Seems solid and well made I got this to replace my Giotto's ball head since I upgraded to a C100 mkII and the weight seemed to be an issue at certain angles. So far this head hold it securely at every angle I've put it at. My only negative point on this is that the tighten knob is on the left side and I am used to it being on the right side. So I am very comfortable squaring my camera up holding it with my left hand and now all that has to change and I need to learn to get precise with my right. I almost returned it because of this before using it but decided to go ahead and try it. I am glad I did thus far and I would recommend it.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not worth a dime and no customer support I am a landscape photographer and I purchased this ball head about 2 years ago and it is terrible. In just over a year the pan lock does not hold and it has an increasing gap to the point the camera leans about 1-2 degrees as soon as you let go. It makes it very hard to get a straight horizon. I contacted both the manufacturer and B&H and did not receive any support. As a photography instructor, I do not recommend anything from Oben and all I heard from B&H was, we will look into it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Sturdy, well-build ball head I use the BC-126 on an Induro AT214 tripod to support a D7100 with a 70-300 mm lens and extension tubes. The tension adjuster helps set the camera exactly where I want it with absolutely no sag or creep even in portrait mode. The head and panning plate are light and sturdy and operate smoothly. For my amateur purposes, the BC-136 would have been overkill.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not Steady Enough I use the head to level my Gigapan EpicPro and a Nikon D800. The weight of the two components is under the specified maximum level. The head is not a steady as I would have liked and after taking a Panorama I have to readjust the setup. It is fairly easy to use; but I would chose another head for this application.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good ball head I have used this for a few weeks now both clamped tight for long exposure shots and with slight friction to take the weight off my arm when tracking moving wildlife. It appears very well made. Both the ball and the pan axes move smoothly and have continuously adjustable friction.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Build Quality, Easy to use, ve Excellent tripod head. I bought this to go on a monopod since I recently upgraded my primary tripod head to a Arca Swiss B1. The Arca Swiss style plates fit this Oben tripod head perfectly. It's a little big for my monopod but will be just fine and will be the head going forward when I upgrade the monopod.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good but I have not used the Oben extensively but first impression is a bit disappointing. Does not tighten well. Maybe with more use it will improve.
