Oben BC-166 overview

  • 1Description

The BC-166 Ball Head from Oben is a durable aluminum ball head that features an Arca-type compatible quick-release system. It has a large locking knob with a tension control screw to give you maximum control of the ball, and a separate knob for the 360° panning movement.

The BC-166's multiple knobs enable higher-precision adjustments to the head than are possible with single-lever heads. Taking panoramic photos is simple, for instance, because you can pan a specific number of degrees while keeping the head's tilt position locked. In fact, the BC-166 features degree markings around its circumference to aid in that task. A notch in the ball head allows you to quickly change between portrait and landscape orientation.

The included quick-release plate attaches to your camera via its standard 1/4"-20 screw, and is secured in place with an Arca-type clamp. A locking knob controls the opening and closing of the aluminum clamp simply and reliably. Two safety screws on the bottom of the plate help prevent your camera from accidentally being released when adjusting the plate fore and aft. One bubble level on the clamp, and another on the locking knob, both ensure that your camera will be level with the horizon.

    Oben BC-166 reviews

BC-166 Ball Head is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 18.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very good I got this ball head as part of a kit. Unlike the legs, this ball head did not disappoint me. My only complaint is it is a bit on the heavy side. Mike P. complained that the tension knob teeth would hurt his hand after 15-30 minutes. I can see why he felt that way. I started to get this feeling too until I realised that I did not have to tighten the knob to the extreme to get my camera in a still position. After than, it was all good. That said, I have not used this ball head extensively yet.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Solid Piece of Hardware The head held my 70-200 with ease and fluidly allowed movement across all axis. Thanks to the heavy duty slide stops, when I loosened it and it slipped from my hand the casters halted it before a 1800 dollar mistake/fiasco could occur.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Outstanding Quality and Performance The capacity of this head is greater that I currently need. I figured that purchasing this head is like a man purchasing a new pair of pants as he enters middle age. You get 1 size bigger because you will grow into them shortly. Themanufacture of the head is flawless. I am veryparticular about fit and finish and was unable to find any flaws in this example. Surprise / Surprise it actually came with instructions and they made sense. The operation of the knobs is smooth and require the right amount of effort to turn them. The ball moves smoothly and does not hang up in any position. The quick release operates smoothly. Idefinitely give it 5 stars and would purchaseanother Oben product based on my experience. Yes I wouldrecommendit to a friend.I also want to complimentthe B&H team. I have purchased several items from B&H and they arrived with in 2 days time. Thedescriptionon the web site is very good and have been exactly as described. The logistical team does afantastic job of getting the orders packed and out the door. I will continue purchasing product from B&H.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Heavy Duty Ball Head This ball head is mounted on my Induro Alloy 8M AT413 Tripod. My D810 with a 80 - 400mm lens with a 2x teleconverter does not move when shooting.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A solid ball head worth the money The Oben BC-166 ball head is well built and holds my Canon 5D Mk3 steady with my 24-105 lens. My first photo shoot with the new head was long exposure night shots at a carnival. The head kept the camera so steady, I found I didn't really need a cable release or timer to trip the shutter. There is only a very slight change in camera and lens position afte tightening the head. Once in position, it doesn't move. I like the QR-40 quick release plate. It's worth noting that it isn't as pictured on the web site. At the time I bought my BC-166, the QR-40 came with a D-ring/hex head/flat slit bolt. I prefer this to the hex head only. I have not been able to locate additional QR-40 plates and recently verified the QR-30 available here at B&H has only the hex head. An additional D-ring bolt is available but who wants to spend extra money for that? The tension screw doesn't appear to be a seperate mechanism. It's a device that limits the loosening of the main mall head tightening knob. It's a little bit touchy to adjust, but with some fine tuning, you can get the ball head to a point where it is still nicely adjustable but not too loose. I think there is room for improvement here, but it works. The pan adjustment is somewhat stiff. It isn't enough to complain about except that I had to send back the first one I received because the adjustment was so stiff that I couldn't even pan counter clockwise without unscrewing the head from the tripod. I called Oben. They had responsive tech support who immediately confirmed the head was defective and told me to send it back to B&H. The B&H customer service was outstanding as always. My replacement head came quickly. Even though the replacement head is stiff, it is smooth and I don't have to worry about unwanted movement when panning. Overall I think this head was worth what I paid for it. There is a clear difference between this head and the one on my travel tripod.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Wonderful Ball head, Pan Knob a little tight in the start Its a great head, i would only rate a product 5 if it is absolutely out of the world, so don't go by the 4 stars i gave, its a quality head. But it has two minor irritations, the pan knob came tightly screwed , so to loosen it took some effort, but once opened it was good, Hope they don't send it so tightly locked. The second one was the tension screw, i didn't know from the picture that it is of a screw type, i initially thought of buying the Feisol CB-70d Head which though doesnt have a sperate knob uses an easier mechanism for the tension knob, but saw the price of this head little low and bought this only to know it is of screw type. But it is not a major thing as long as you carry a coin to rotate the screw. Overall it is a good product and would recommend it to anyone.Go buy it

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Built like a tank-great value! I purchased the BC-166 ball head to replace an older, lighter-weight ball head on my heavy tripod in the studio. I wanted a ball head that would hold a lot of weight, but be easy to adjust. The Oben really fits the bill. I don't think I will ever exceed the 66 pound capacity of this head; but that much capacity makes for rock-steady locked-down performance. The controls are simple to set up and use, it stays put where you point it, with any combination of camera and lens I've tested so far--what more could you ask for? The only negative thing I have found falls under the personal preference category. The BC-166 is definitely made to be controlled and adjusted with your right hand. I am ambidextrous, and I'm used to keeping my right hand on the camera in shooting position while I adjust my other, older ball head with my left hand. After a few minutes practice, I'm getting used to reaching around the head to access the knobs with my left hand while I hold the camera on target with my right. Not an insurmountable problem, just different than what I'm used to.
