This is a simple wooden frame that's more durable than plastic counterparts. It's built well and hangs on the wall or stands on a desk or tabletop.

Yes, you can use a matt. It is thick enough. Note the frame window is 8x10. So with a matt you will crop an 8x10 print or you can use a smaller print.

is there enough room in the frame for the thickness of a mat? is the opening of the 8 x 10, 8 x 10"?

The 8x10 frame is for 8x10 size prints without a matt. It is really made to not use a matt. If you did use a matt, the print would need to be smaller or would crop the print.
