Impact SF-ABRL160 Overview

  • 1Description

The Impact SF-ABRL160 Stand Mount Flash with LED Modeling Light is a lightweight monolight with straightforward features that make it ideal for most applications. The 160 watt second strobe features a bright LED modeling lamp that, unlike its quartz counterparts, is virtually maintenance-free. And instead of lasting 100 hours, the LED typically lasts approximately 25,000 hours.

The SF-ABRL160 has a built-in optical slave for wireless triggering, a sync cord for direct firing from your camera, a built-in umbrella receptacle, and a 5/8" standard stand mount. It accepts Impact's 50 x 50 cm (FF-SB50) and 50 x 70 cm (FF-SB70) Softboxes without a speed ring thanks to the head's built-in flex rod holes. An easy-to-mount barndoor set with filters, filter frame, and a honeycomb grid (SF-BDK) are available as optional accessories, as is a snoot (SF-SNT) with its own removable grid. Selectable flash output is full and 1/2 power.

    Impact SF-ABRL160 Reviews

SF-ABRL160 Stand Mount Flash with LED Modeling Light is rated 4.3 out of 5 by 23.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nice starter mono With a Guide number of 35 and an f/stop flash variability of only 1 stop, this is a good beginner light. It's best used as either a softbox light or a rim light. It can also be used to illuminate backgrounds. I have bought 4 of them and they're nice to have because they're extremely portable for transport, but beware that the flash tube is not changeable. Given that, once your flash tube goes out, you will probably throw this away. Even with all those disadvantages, I would buy this again because it's nice to have for a price that is below one hundred dollars.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Great & Lacking A great little light that fits a specific need for me- small & lite, more powerfull than a speedlight with led modeling light that won't run down battery power ( I use a vagabond2). The fail with this unit is that it has no available reflectors, so the 160ws is spread out over 160 degrees. If they made an efficient reflector it would be much more valuable to me. But for the price it is a great little light.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Updated - Happier with it After a rather negative review of this product, and emails to the company, I actually got a phone call from someone there, which made all the difference in the world. The umbrella socket issue was resolved, I got answers to the questions I had that I couldn't get because of not getting a user manual, and he was incredibly helpful. I also learned that the unit has a far longer expected life span than I would have guessed, so replacement of lights isn't an issue. I still think that there should have been some kind of instructional manual or pamphlet accompanying the light, but that sounds like it may have just been a fluke, and isn't the norm. A protective cover or pouch would also have been nice. But all functional issues are resolved, questions answered, and I am very happy with it for the price. It is working well for my purposes.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from yes I like these lights, although they have a few flaws. First off, can't beat them for the price. I have about 15 of these out in the field, have only had one failure in a few years of hard use. They are a bit plasticky and only have two adjustments. I like the LED modeling lights. I don't use modifiers with them, but if you do you must use theirs. It would be really great if they included a plastic cap for the flash for use when packing. If they made a deluxe version of this flash, with more power adjustments and built-in radio slave, that would be great. The super small size is really nice. This would be a great back-up light to always have on hand on shoots. So small, comes with long sync and AC cords, super lightweight.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Completely Satisfied I just bought three of these Impact SF-ABRL-160 strobe heads along with three lightboxes (extra). I must say I am very satisfied with the quality, and I'm impressed with the light's performance verses value. The LED modeling lights are a soft white dream. There is practically no heat except for the brief moment when the strobe fires (just like any standard camera flash). So there is no need for heat shielded electronics, cooling fans, heavy over-sized ventilated housings nor is there a need for expensive high-heat resistant lightbox fabrics. Yes, these lights are kind of small at 160 watt seconds(ws), but I use three of these strobes for my table-top macro studio. So combined they produce 480ws of light potential and this is pretty much major overkill for my 2ft x 2ft macro shooting stage. Though the flash heads are not variable beyond and full power, I can combine my three neutral density filters on my lens to shoot at different f-stops. My ND1, ND2 & ND3 filters can be combined to produce up to a six f-stop variance per power setting. I shot Color Chart samples for each ND filter combination and created Lightroom User Presets to correct for any color or contrast variance. I wish the light head came with a standard reflector, but heck I'd just toss it aside anyway for lightboxes or umbrellas. So that isn't too much of a concern for me. I also wish the built in speed ring rotated freely. However, using an articulated umbrella bracket for my lightstand makes for a good workaround by rotating the whole light head left or right as needed. I also wish the power cord was a bit more robust, but it functions perfectly fine and it is long enough for boom arm use. I think it is a perfect little popper. The SF-ABRL160 is inexpensive, generates little to no heat, pretty study, light weight, very portable and delivers plenty of oomph for my applications. I am so impressed, I'm thinking about buying one more flash head along with both the Snoot and Barndoor attachments.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from These lights are a steal! I purchased these lights as accent lighting for my backdrops but turns out that they have way more uses and quickly became my go to lights for on location shooting with portable batteries. combined with the impact portable softboxes, these lights provide a powerful, smooth, and even lighting similar to soft indirect daylight. there are lots of attachments you can buy that fit these lights such as snoots barn doors with detachable color gels softboxes, I was even able to use my impact collapsible beauty dish with my Bowens adapter mount! I am so pleased with the way impact is evolving to make products that play well with one another. This light is affordable and effective. Great Job Impact!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from pretty decent Nice. Take up less room than standard strobes. Only two power settings, but that is fine. LED modelling lights are nice as they won't burn out easily. Modelling light output is o.k., not great. Helps for focusing, that's about it. The plastic stand adapter part is actually pretty good quality for a cheap strobe. I don't feel like it is going to break or that I have to baby it too much. All in all a decent low priced strobe. Best parts are the small size and the LED modelling lights.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Nice, but some baffling omissions I needed an ultra light kit for location shooting, mostly artwork reproduction for my clients (paintings and small sculptures), so I got two of these along with some simple Impact light stands and Savage umbrella softboxes (which work much better than simple umbrellas and are highly portable). And an InterFit padded tripod bag, in which everything fits nicely. The lights give plenty of power for my needs, I can put them about 6' away from a large-ish canvas (at 45 degrees pointing towards the center) and get a correct exposure at f11, ISO100. These are obviously made for a fixed use in a small, very dark studio, but taking everything into consideration, there are some baffling omissions: No protective cap of any kind. The flash tube is exposed and flush with the front and can be VERY easily damaged. I have some padded lens pouches that fit the lights and somewhat do the trick, but I will have to manufacture something more solid. And, the lights come packed in a plastic baggie inside a simple cardboard box and I am very happy that both tubes survived the shipping. The ready and power lights on top are a joke, badly positioned and barely visible in all but the dimmest conditions. The manual is a vaste of paper, doesn't identify crucial stuff like the power switches etc. (took me some fiddling to figure them out). I am experienced with studio equipment so no biggie, but these are mostly aimed at the beginners and hobbyists and I can see some confusion ensuing. All in all, they do the trick, but with some small modifications (just the included front cap would do), they would be a much better product.

Does anyone know what the Guide Number for this unit is? It is not listed in the specs on this page.

This type of lights do not use the usual Guide Number specification. The equivalent 160 Watts to GN is 100.
