Oben BE-117T overview

  • 1Description

The BE-117T Ball Head from Oben is a lightweight aluminum ball head that features an Arca-type compatible quick-release system. It has a large locking knob to control the movement of the ball, and a separate knob for the 360° panning movement.

The BE-117T's multiple knobs enable higher-precision adjustments to the head than are possible with single-lever heads. Taking panoramic photos is simple, for instance, because you can pan a specific number of degrees while keeping the head's tilt position locked. In fact, the BE-117T features degree markings around its circumference to aid in that task.

This travel ball head has a trim profile, making it ideal for compact travel tripods that have reversible folding legs. A notch in the ball head allows you to quickly change between portrait and landscape orientation.

The included quick-release plate attaches to your camera via its standard 1/4"-20 screw, and is secured in place with an Arca-type clamp. A locking knob controls the opening and closing of the aluminum clamp simply and reliably. Two safety screws on the bottom of the plate help prevent your camera from accidentally being released when adjusting the plate fore and aft. One bubble level on the clamp, and another on the locking knob, both ensure that your camera will be level with the horizon.

    Oben BE-117T reviews

BE-117T Ball Head is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 32.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works like a charm, QR screw is great Bought this to replace a cheaper head on a perfectly good tripod. I like this T version because it does not have the tapered base and perfectly fits any tripod. Could not have asked for a better fit and finish. The report about the QR screw being a problem is silly. Mine has a flip-out wing nut that allows me to tighten the screw very tightly. Don't even need a allen wrench. Although it is supplied also. The panning lock is perfect. The ball head is very very smooth and tightens with little effort to a point my camera would never move with any lens. Does not interfere with the battery door, at least on a Canon 70D. Light weight and quality manufacturing. A++ Oben!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nicely Made I had a perfectly fine tripod that had a ballhead I did not like. I wanted an Arca-type quick-release system. Instead of getting rid of my perfectly fine tripod just to get a new ballhead, I bought this Oben BE-117T. It went on my tripod in seconds and I like it very much. Its workmanship is excellent. It has a very smooth action and all moving parts seem exceptionally well made. They also sell the BE-117. I purchased the BE-117T because it has a flat base as opposed to wider base. I like, also, that it came with an adapter so it could be used on tripods with smaller ballhead screws. In other words, this ballhead will work with just about any tripod.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Quality Ball Head, Affordable Price Point I bought this to replace the stock pistol grip ball head on my sunpak tripod which was incapable of locking out. I've been using the oben head for two weeks pretty extensively and have been very pleased with its performance. I primarily shoot with a 20mm sigma 1.4 on a 5d mark II body, totaling at about 9 lbs of weight and this head holds it effortlessly. Primarily shooting time lapse, it is essential that there is no movement in my setup for hours at a time and this head has proven itself worthy for that task. Beyond its sleak design and performance, the price point puts this ball head over the top... It's a no brainier.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from HEX WRENCH REQUIRED TO ATTACH PLATE A decent ballhead, I like the fact that it has a panning lock. That's why I bought it. But the hex screw requiring a Allen wrench to allow attachment of plate to camera body is a deal breaker. Considering that my cameras' compartment door for battery and SD card slot is located right next to the tripod female socket, so the plate must be removed to gain access. I'm not carrying a hex wrench around in my pocket. I removed the hex 1/4 -20 from the plate, and replaced it with a screw that is a straight slot (you can use a quarter) and it also has a flip up hog ring that I took from another head that came with my travel tripod. (Benro). What is Oben thinking?

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very Pleased I bought this low cost, ball style head for my compact length, lightweight Manfrotto 190go! tripod that I use for hiking and travel. It's very well made, has smooth movements, and solid locking clutch adjustments. It can handle my Canon 7d Mk II and the 70-200 zoom without a whimper. The quick disconnect design is well thought out and has a D key on the Qtr-20 mounting bolt so no coin or Allen wrench is necessary. It does everything I need it to do making me a happy camper!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Right size, quality, and price! Works great! I wanted a strong, quality ball head that I could put on my regular tripod, travel tripod, or monopod. The BE-117T was the right choice. It works beautifully with all three, holding my Nikon DSLR with a 300mm lens or my Sony bridge camera. The overall size is not too big for my travel tripod and monopod. The ball won't loosen with the weight of my camera. It pans very smoothly. No question, the right choice for me!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect for the price Great for general photography. The head is very well machined. In other words excellent fit and finish- should last for years. You can not go wrong for the price. The small price difference for the T gives you some flexibility you may need. You can stop reading the reviews and pull the trigger and just wait for the brown truck.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Tough and strong I've been using this ball head for about a month now and I really like it. It's a good size for travelling and hiking but strong enough to hold my Nikon D810 (almost 2 kgs) with a Tamron 150 - 600mm (almost 2kgs) or my Nikkor 80-200mm (2kgs) with ease. I can trust this ball head to hold those weights for hours. The knobs are easy to use and the pan is really smooth. For the price, it's fantastic.
