Lensbaby LBSPNA Overview

  • 1Description

The Spark 50mm f/5.6 Selective Focus Lens for Nikon F Mount from Lensbaby is a fun and affordable introduction to the world of Lensbaby optics and will set you on your way to experimental, creative and gorgeous selective focus photography. The Spark tilting lens body and selective focus optic makes images with a rounded area of focus with one "sweet" spot of ultra sharp focus surrounded by a gradually more and more blurred out-of-focus zone. The effect of this lens creates a dreamy feel with a unique sense of beauty that allows the viewer to really embrace the in-focus aspect of the photo, whether it be a person's eyes or hands or a flower's petal, and then to sense the gorgeously out-of-focus or dynamically motion-blurred background.

The lens body is all-plastic making it very light but the lens itself is a multi-coated glass doublet: two coated lenses combined to reduce reflections and offer sharp focus. The aperture is fixed at f/5.6 and the prime focal length is 50mm, a great length for portraits and general photography. The lens is manual focusing only, which is actually ideal given that you should select your point of focus with precision, and the minimum focusing distance is 13".

Compatible with all Lensbaby 37mm threaded accessory lenses and with the Lensbaby Optic Swap System, the Spark is a great way to start your foray into the creativity afforded by Lensbaby lenses and accessories.

Sweet Spot Selective Focus
The Spark 50mm lens precisely focuses on one point within the frame creating a sweet spot of focus surrounded by gradual blur.
The Spark's two optical elements are multi-coated to allow increased light transmission, contrast and reduce ghosting.
Focus Distance
The Spark can focus from a minimum of 13" to infinity. It is a 50mm lens with a fixed f/5.6 aperture.
This Nikon mount lens is compatible with all Lensbaby 37mm threaded accessory lenses and the Lensbaby Optic Swap System of interchangeable creative effect optics.
Manual Focus Lens
Spark lens focuses manually with a turn of the soft plastic body.

    Lensbaby LBSPNA Reviews

Spark 50mm f/5.6 Selective Focus Lens for Nikon F Mount is rated 3.8 out of 5 by 25.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent entry level lens for exploirng effects I received my Spark 50 to use with my D7000 and I was extremely, yet happily surprised with this lens. Yes, it is all plastic but quite well constructed. The biggest surprise is how easy it is to construct a picture and while I would have liked a more convenient way to focus rather than using the bellows to advance or compress the lens, it isn't to difficult once you get the hang of it. I've only used this in still-life situations but I plan to take it out this week for some action images. More than likely I will move up to one of the other Lensbaby products like the Composer or Edge but for now, this is a fun lens to play with.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Fun I finally can take pictures that expensive tilt shift lens let you take without breaking my bank account. It's bit awkward to use for the first time, for you are trying to press the shutter while trying to steady your hands to keep the subject in focus (the "spring/folds/crease" is elastic, so you have to apply a bit of pressure to hold the lens in focus), but I'm getting used to it after 10 minutes of use - probably that's why you pay more for higher end Lensbaby. But for the price I pay, this lens superseded my expectation. I also love B&H expedited shipping. Got the lens in 3 days (from NY to California!)

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Waste of money I purchased this toy with the hope of getting some unusual images, but this lens was just annoying to use. The user has to hold the lens in position with one hand while pressing the shutter button with the other. I doubt that I will ever use it. For those who want to explore selective focus photography, the higher end Lensbaby products are probably what you want or you could achieve some of the same effects in Photoshop. But, I can't recommend this product.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Very cheap, but may deliver interesting images This thing is literary a toy. It looks, feels, and works as a toy. If you play with it long enough, Im sure that you can get some really cool images, however the process will be frustrating to some. Im not ready to spend too much time practicing with it, but will remember to bring to the city, where shooting some NYC landscape may be really fun. Sometimes focus is sharp, but most it just blows. I will ask clients to look away and not look at the camera, if I ever use this lens for more creative shoots, along with some other, good lenses of course.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Lensbabies Spark Great Lens/Great Price! I use this lens to give a new interesting prespective in portrait shoots and with great practice and handling you can use it to give a creative new prespective look to all your shots. -I love how involed and how you would have to get out of you comfort zone to capture a great shot by get up close and known you're shooting you subject if you are shooting street photography!-The cheapest lensbabies a available just under $ so if you want the extraens to give you alot of interesting new look and not having to leave a hole in your wallet!!!!-Cons i'd say is you can do these effects on photo editing softwares.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Hard to describe This lens is a complete learning curve on artistic interpretation. If you keep an open mind, you're going to have a blast with it. If you're going for shots to enter in contests, don't go with this lens. Lights are the most fun to take shots of. Especially small lights. They distort into magical little spheres of delight even if you have no idea how you'll use the image. Did I mention light? The one thing you need an abundance of with this lens is light. Don't even try to depend on a forced flash. It won't fire in that mode. Haven't tried it with alternative light sources indoors, but I can tell you that you need some pretty good sunlight outdoors to make it work. Being winter and I live in the PNW, those days are numbered. Mostly, have fun. Don't expect too much. Let your imagination take over and don't take this lens too seriously or you'll be frustrated. Great little find for not much money.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fun addition to my camera bag Playing with selective focus has been really fun with this lens. I took it out immediately to the high line after picking it up at B&H and got some really interesting shots which I wouldn't have been able to capture with a traditional lens. There's also something cathartic about using your hands to press in the lens and shift it around to get the focus you desire. I did have varying results when trying it out in low light, and found it hard to get anything in focus.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from This is for Amateurs I should have done more research on this item before ordering it...I wanted it for both still and video. It works fine but it's not up to any professional quality...I will be ordering the Composer as I need it more for video and some for still work. The concept is great and offers a lot of fun for most amateurs and enthusiasts, but pros beware, move up to at least the Composer level.
