Lensbaby LBSPCA overview

  • 1Description

The Spark 50mm f/5.6 Selective Focus Lens for Canon EF Mount from Lensbaby is a fun and affordable introduction to the world of Lensbaby optics and will set you on your way to experimental, creative and gorgeous selective focus photography. The Spark tilting lens body and selective focus optic makes images with a rounded area of focus with one "sweet" spot of ultra sharp focus surrounded by a gradually more and more blurred out-of-focus zone. The effect of this lens creates a dreamy feel with a unique sense of beauty that allows the viewer to really embrace the in-focus aspect of the photo, whether it be a person's eyes or hands or a flower's petal, and then to sense the gorgeously out-of-focus or dynamically motion-blurred background.

The lens body is all-plastic making it very light but the lens itself is a multi-coated glass doublet: two coated lenses combined to reduce reflections and offer sharp focus. The aperture is fixed at f/5.6 and the prime focal length is 50mm, a great length for portraits and general photography. The lens is manual focusing only, which is actually ideal given that you should select your point of focus with precision, and the minimum focusing distance is 13".

Compatible with all Lensbaby 37mm threaded accessory lenses and with the Lensbaby Optic Swap System, the Spark is a great way to start your foray into the creativity afforded by Lensbaby lenses and accessories.

Sweet Spot Selective Focus
The Spark 50mm lens precisely focuses on one point within the frame creating a sweet spot of focus surrounded by gradual blur.
The Spark's two optical elements are multi-coated to allow increased light transmission, contrast and reduce ghosting.
Focus Distance
The Spark can focus from a minimum of 13" to infinity. It is a 50mm lens with a fixed f/5.6 aperture.
This Canon mount lens is compatible with all Lensbaby 37mm threaded accessory lenses and the Lensbaby Optic Swap System of interchangeable creative effect optics.
Manual Focus Lens
Spark lens focuses manually with a turn of the soft plastic body.

    Lensbaby LBSPCA reviews

Spark 50mm f/5.6 Selective Focus Lens for Canon EF Mount is rated 4.3 out of 5 by 33.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Simply wonderful little optical wonder Little Lensbaby Spark cost half price of previous cheapest model, wonderful Muse. Basically Spark and Muse work and look the same. Except Spark will work with limited accessories. Fun factor is to the roof. Basically every picture is different. Pictures are not as sharp as from typical lens, but creative distortion, ability to blur just part of the picture is just another creative level you can add work. Spark costs around $, way below cost of any new lens. Except for super tele lens, costing me a lot more, Spark is able to change how your pictures look. Lensbaby Spark is a great way to start tilt shift abilities in your work. I strongly recomend this little wonder to anyone!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Lensbaby Spark 50mm f/5.6 Review I use the Lensbaby Spark primarily for view. I seldom or never do photos for it. I love the filmic (24fps) creative bokeh look it gives, though I have a hard time focusing since this is purely manual. I so much love the dreamy effect it gives out of the box. The greatest thing about it is as mentioned, the creative bokeh, which I think one cannot replicate in post or any other paraphernalia aside from the lens. You just have to practice the manual spring-like focus motion. The things that aren't so great: the focus, you really can't track focus specially for video; the minimum focal length which is f4, thus you'll have a hard time adjusting your exposure when it's getting dark.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fun get out and play lens!!! What a fun little lens! I didn't jump on the lensbaby band wagon early enough! It just gives you a new way of looking at things which is exactly what I needed. It's been so long since I have just taken my camera out with me on the street to record life around me. I feel like a photo student again!!! I missed that wonder and excitement about if and how something is going to turn out. I must take this on portrait and wedding shoots! I would recommend this for anyone who is looking for a new and re-energized view in their photography. I needed it. I mean I love what I do, don't get me wrong. But I used to love just going and taking pictures of anything that caught my eye. I haven't done that in so long and now I am doing it again since I got this :)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy to use Special Effects lens. Great fun creating selective focus macro close-ups. Exposure is guessed at, and set manually, as AV aperture priority on your camera body does not work with this lens. A fixed, round iris of f/5.6 gives pleasant bokeh. Setting shutter speed and/or changing ISO determines exposure. Don't worry about getting it precisely right, just enjoy taking lots of shots and deleting those blown-out or underexposed. Focal length is determined by manually squishing the front of the Lensbaby in or out. For scenics, you have a bellows-like selective plane of focus to play with. A smaller, lighter weight camera body would be easier to hold as your thumb and index finger must be kept on the Lensbaby holding the lens in its desired position at all times. It does not stay in place by itself.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Unique Little Lens! I bought the Lensbaby Spark for Canon EF when it was featured in the B&H DealZone a few weeks ago. I probably wouldn't have made the purchase if I was paying full price, but the deal was so good I couldn't pass it up. I've been wanting to experiment with a Lensbaby for quite some time, and I took the chance and bought it. So far, I've been very impressed! This is a unique little lens, with emphasis on little! It weighs nothing, and is about the size of a typical 50mm lens, maybe just a little wider. The materials it is made of feel very durable, and I'm not afraid to bend it around, which was one of my concerns before playing with it. It's a good thing to keep in my camera bag; it doesn't take up much space and it's a great tool to use whenever I'm feeling a little creative. My only complaint about this product is on the instructions that came with it. Most of the included instructions are just pictures of the best settings to use on the camera. The only written instructions there were explained how to focus the lens. A bigger manual, and maybe some examples of photos taken with the lens and how to achieve the same look, would have been beneficial to recieve with the lens. However, URLs included in the instructions direct you to online videos that are great for beginning DSLR/Lensbaby users. Overall, I really enjoy using this product, and look forward to more experimenting with it!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good for what you pay It isn't the most sophisticated piece of equipment, but it does exactly what it says its going to. Having to depress the lens to get your selected focus is difficult to get use to, and keeping it steady to hit the shutter is something you need to practice with. Extremely lightweight though, this lens will allow anyone with time and patience the chance to have fun with selective focus.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Great first LensBaby I give it three stars. Reason the build quality is ehhhh, very plasticky and the lens bellows are thin. But it does exactly what it's advertised to do. Would try not to over use it on shoots the effect is the same pretty much every photo. For the price I'm very sastified if I had payed over 100$ I would be upset I bought it. I used it for a fun lens option at a wedding. Didn't find it on my camera to much I just was to cheesed out by the effect.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This is Fun! I like the ability of the Spark to shift the focus point, and the colors of my images have been so rich. Frankly I couldn't spring for the original more expensive Lensbaby models, and when I saw this at such an affordable price I jumped at the opportunity to try it out. I am hooked.
