    Sonnet Tempo SSD reviews

Tempo 6Gb/s SATA PCI Express 2.5" Solid State Drive Card is rated 4.9 out of 5 by 8.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Bootable on Mac Pro 5,1 (mid 2010) Was able to mount SSD on Tempo card out of the box. However to boot from the card was a bit trickier with my setup. At first, I was not successfully updating the firmware (available from Somnet's site). Run the installer and then after the restart prompt, you should see terminal-like instructions to complete the process. My issue was that I was running a third party video card and so the reboot was messing with firmware update. Never saw the firmware instructions on the first attempts. Once I put back in my factory installed video card, the firmware updated and I was able to boot. Amazing boot times and launch speeds. Best upgrade for an aging computer.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Full SSD Speed in a MacPro The reason I purchased the Tempo card was because I installed a Samsung 840 EVO SSD into my MacPro3,1, and was disappointed by the speed increase. While it was much faster than the WDC Velociraptor it replaced, the built-in SATA ports on the MacPro max out at 3 Gbps. That limits the speed of the Samsung 6 Gbps connection to 3 Gbps, so I only got 267/257 Mbps of read/write throughput. (See images from Blackmagic Speed Test.) Then I installed the SSD onto the Tempo card and, BOOM, it practically doubled the read/write speeds to 503/470 Mbps, respectively. The Tempo card allowed me to maximize the throughput of my SSD drive, which is exactly what I was looking to do. A word of advise: Make sure you install the Tempo card into a 16X PCIe slot. If you accidentally install it into a 4X slot (as I initially did), the speed will be much slower. That's why I only got about 167 Mbps when I had it in the 4X slot. If you have a MacPro with 16X PCIe slots or a PC with the same, the Sonnet Tempo card will get your SSD working at full speed.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Product and works with OEM MB I used this product to get a Dell Server to run on SSD instead of it's RAID Controller backplane. Worked and got detected by the BIOS right off the bat. I tried 2 other similar SSD PCIe Cards and that's the only one that worked right away for OEM Dell server Motherboard. The Server was a Poweredge R900. Not sure if it'll work for other models but I would I assume that it would. I bought 5 of those and all work fantastic

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Got card to work with VMware ESXi 5.5 I installed two SSD drives I had laying around. One was a Kingston 64 GB and the second was an OCZ 240 GB. I installed the Sonnet card in the riser cage of a HP DL380 G5 server. When I booted the server, I saw the Card and drives attached in the POST screen. Once ESXi 5.5 loaded, I checked the Storage Adapters. The Sonnet SATA adapter was not displayed. I found the following website that helped to get the card recognized by VMware ESXi I enabled SSH for the ESXi server and used Putty to connect. I ran the following commands: esxcli software acceptance set --level=CommunitySupported esxcli network firewall ruleset set -e true -r httpClient esxcli software vib install -d -n sata-xahci Installation Result Message: The update completed successfully, but the system needs to be rebooted for the changes to be effective. Reboot Required: true VIBs Installed: VFrontDe_bootbank_sata-xahci_1.10-1 I rebooted the server and checked the Storage Adapters again The SATA controller was displayed: * SATA 6Gb/s Controller vmhba2 Block SCSI vmhba32 Block SCSI vmhba2 had the following SSD attached: Local ATA Disk (t10.ATA_____KINGSTON_SNVP325S264GB__________________________30QS102IT72Z vmhba32 had the following SSD attached: Local ATA Disk (t10.ATA_____OCZ2DAGILITY3____________________________OCZ2D15A811VVBZIIYT28) I created a datastore for both of the SSD disks without any problem. I set the following on the ESX host: Set Swap File Location Datastore 'VIEW-ESX02 Local SSD - Kingston 64GB' Set Host Cache Location: VIEW-ESX02 Local SSD - Kingston 64GB Works great as a Host Based Cache datastore.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Supercharge your Mac Pro After reading the reviews on this product I decided to dive in and give it a try. I bought 2 for the 2 Mac Pro's 4,1 and 5,1 I own. Since I already had Samsung 840 EVO SSD's this was a reasonably priced upgrade to try out. I must say this product wakes up your Mac Pro as it doubled the speed from having them installed in the trays. I was getting read/write speed of 470/480 Mbps respectively. Running PhotoShop you won't see much of a bump increase but media programs will take full advantage of this card. This product did exactly what I was expecting. This card makes your Mac Pro scream. Super easy to install, plus you can choose the brand and capacity of drives you want to use in your setup. You will have to update the firmware if you want it to be Mac bootable. It will recognize the drive after installing but it won't be Mac bootable. Don't panic; install the firmware and your good to go instantly. I still have the extra card to install but I haven't decided if I'm going to raid both SSD drives to double the speed or just run data on the second drive. Either way it's a win/win solution. This is the best upgrade for your Mac Pro without a doubt.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works as advertised! I have a MacPro 2012 12core unit. I plugged my Samsung 850EVO 1TB SSD into it and then inserted it into my PCI slot #2. Results between 400-500 GB/s. I was very happy. I then stuck an old 2.5 inch HDD from an old MacBook I had lying around in the other slot and presto it also allowed me to Boot up on it. I have not tried to run a 3.5 inch HDD on it with an SATA extension cable as I am not sure I could handle the power requirements.
