There's No Replacement for Batteries replacement

Modern digital photography is totally dependent on batteries and going cheap on who makes your batteries makes about as much sense as picking the cheapest memory card. In my experience the BLF19 rechargeable battery for Lumix cameras (specifically the G9) is a strong performer and, so far, I've never needed to use my backup battery after a morning of photographing raptors along the Gulf Coast.

I've purchased a few generic brand batteries that don't seem to hold their charge half as well as the official batteries. In short, I now have 3 batteries that will last me a total of roughly 6 hours. I'll probably run out of memory long before I run out of juice.

A while back I had purchased some off-brand DMW-BLF19 replacement batteries (Watson and Duracell). Their performance was not great, and eventually several are pretty much useless. They were considerably less expensive than the Panasonic, so I gave them a try. They had a so-so life span, so I just bought one Panasonic (about 3 times the cost of an off-brand), and its charge doesn't last any longer than a new off-brand. It's not worth 3 times the money.

This battery has a long life and recharges relatively quickly. Actually, I've never ran out of battery on my GH-3, so I've never had to use this spare battery. It's nice that this Panasonic battery is relatively inexpensive, not like their professional camcorder batteries!

I have a collection of these batteries from 2013 onward for my GH3 and GH4 bodies. Is there any way to tell which of the units is the oldest? I should have marked them by age but did not. I shoot all the time and want to recycle the older ones in favor of buying new ones.

I put a piece of removable tape on the end of each battery, then write the date on it in pencil when I charged it. I can then judge how long the battery is lasting (depending on how often I use the camera, of course). I recycle the ones that discharge quickly.
