Elinchrom RX 4 overview

  • 1Description

The Elinchrom D-Lite 400W/s RX 4 Flash Head raises the bar on the capabilities of a lightweight, portable strobe. The auto-sensing, multi-voltage flash D-Lite RX 4 recognizes any AC power source from 90-260VAC, allowing power variability over 5.0 stops in 1/10 stop increments. Recycling is a lightning-fast 0.35-1.6 sec. (115V) with flash durations as short as an action-stopping 1/800 sec at full power. But that's just the beginning.

The D-Lite 400W/s RX 4 is packed with professional and convenience features usually found in flash heads twice its price. Forget about tripping over PC cords. Although this head accepts one it also has a built-in EL-Skyport Receiver with eight frequency channels that can handle four distinct groups of flashes. Separate purchase of the EL Skyport ELS Speed Transmitter not only allows you to trigger your flash at distances up to 393' but gives you control of power on/off, modeling light functions and Speed Sync activation. Free software for Mac and PC computers is available, providing additional features such as Flash-Delay for strobing effects. Add an optional Wi-Fi module to the transmitter and you can use specially designed apps that allow full remote control via your for iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch.

D-Lite 400W/s RX 4's bayonet mount accepts all Elinchrom accessories and softboxes up to 53" (135 cm). It comes with a power cord with a U.S. plug, sync cord, flash tube and protective cap. The included 120V 100W modeling lamp must be swapped out when using the unit in nominal 230V electrical environments.

    Elinchrom RX 4 reviews

    D-Lite 400W/s RX 4 Flash Head is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 14.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Nice lights however... I was really excited to get these lights, I did a lot of research online and I really couldn't find much negative about them people love these lights especially for the price. At first blush they were ideal, easy to use, great control, seemed to be built really well, etc. however not long after I had these lights I had trouble in fact one light right out of the box had issues. There seems to have an issue with the modeling lights, they stop working after awhile and yes I changed the bulbs. In my 5 light system I have only two lights that the modeling light still works. Contacting Elinchrome was a little tricky too and it took their tech dept quite awhile (over a month) to get back to me. I shoot in studio only so its not like they have been bumped and jarred on location, and the lights do not sit turned on all day either. I don't really want to upgrade to something else now that I have sunk a chunk of cash into these, but I need modeling lights or at least have the option of using them. If you don't use modeling lights I would really recommend these lights.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good light for the money This light is targeted squarely at those who would also consider an AlienBees B800 (320WS). I went with the Elinchrom becauseA) Sale price was less than AlienBees B800!B) The built in optical slave can ignore the pre-flash from a TTL unit which is a nice feature in a pinch if you don't have a working radio slave.C) It has a handle. The fact the AlienBees units don't have handles really bothers me.D) Built in Skyport and the associated iPhone appE) It beeps when recycled. Yes you can turn it off. The beep duration is even programmable. The AlienBees do not beep.F) Surprisingly lightweight and compact for a 400WS head.G) Accessories like the standard reflectors are made well. The AlienBees standard reflectors are thin and flimsy almost like a soda can.H) Elinchrom is now distributed in the U.S. by the MAC Group which also performs service (not that my light has needed service).I) Accessories LOCK onto the head, not just held by springs like the AlienBees.J) The stand mount has a metal sleeve inside for durability. Nice touch.CONSA) The standard reflector is not included. It's a $ add on.B) The flash duration is longer than the AlienBees, at least according to the specs.C) That crazy 7mm umbrella hole. Would it kill Elinchrom to make it 8mm to accept all the Photoflex umbrellas I have? Yes yes, the 8mm slot is built into the knob on the stand mount, but the 7mm one is more on axis with the center of the light.D) The optical slave dome wiggles. I bought two of these lights and the slave on each wiggles so I assume it's normal. But it's annoying.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great little light This is my third D-Lite 400 and for the most part I love 'em. I'm a professional wedding photographer but use these light primarily for studio work. They have more than enough power for almost everything I do in the studio, are easy to control, are light enough to move around easily and throw nice quality light. However, the think I enjoy most about them is the Sky Link wireless functionality. The ONLY issue I have with them is that the Sky Link transmitter easily dislodges from my Mark III's hot shoe. It was always a surprise in the beginning when the flash didn't fire but now that I know it's a pretty easy fix. Bottom line... if you're looking for an attractively priced quality monolight this should be on your short list.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nice, affordable strobe Lightweight, reliable light, this is the third I got. Glad to see that Elinchrom fixed the tilt control handle they had an issue with their previous plastic handle provider so it used to break easily. Built it Skyport receiver makes triggering the light remotely easy if you already own a Skyport transmitter.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Love it!!! Love the light - worked great. My only 2 complaints are 1) have to use an elinchrom transmitter. The generic one I had didn't cause it to fire and 2) the manual that came with it was useless. Googled it and watched a YouTube video to learn the different features.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Strobe at an Affordable Price I now own three of these, and I absolutely love them. I plan on adding a fourth soon. I use them primarily in my portraiture work. They are intuitive to use, have excellent build quality, and some really nice features. The best of those features is its sky-port system that allows you to fire the heads by using a trigger flash OR even better - to purchase the Elinchrom Speed wireless transmitter (which I did) that allows you to not only trigger them with a radio signal, but ALSO allows you to raise or lower the power on these heads wirelessly in up to 4 groupings. You only have to purchase the transmitter - these heads already have the receiver built in. This allows me to control a four light set-up and enjoy the variability of four groupings: 1) my key light; 2) two fill/kicker lights; and a fourth hair light with a snoot if I need it (or use it for a backdrop/accent light). These heads, combined with various Elinchrom light modifiers that snap into the front - such as 8 diffusers, snoots, umbrellas, soft boxes and snap-in grids - makes for an excellent and powerful flash kit that will not break your bank - yet has excellent quality in both lighting equipment and reliable, powerful light itself. I am extremely happy with my choice of investing in this equipment.
