CHAUVET DJ LED Followspot 75ST Reviews

Decent, but could be better....

It is bright and is much nicer to use than our giant old spotlights. Also easier to carry up and down the stairs to the top of the performing arts center. Biggest issue I had was the fact that the shutter handle on top came unscrewed inside of the light. I had to take it apart and reassemble with with some Loctite on the threads. I also zip tied a 3lb weight to the handle on the bottom/back to give it a little mass to balance it and help it pan more fluidly. When it is focused sharp, the edges of the aperture look terrible. So we defocused it a bit and added a Light Hamburg Frost to it. Overall its very decent but could be made much better with a little more cost.

OK for the Price

This followspot is bright (for a small venue)light-weight and reasonably priced. My initial impression is more-or-less positive. There are some things to note, though. The color temperature seems more blue than most daylight color temperature instruments. I suspect this is a matter of the quality of the LEDS. I'm afraid that this will render skin tones in a less than flattering way. The focus mechanism is not smoothat all. It feels loose and unlubricated. It's going to be very hard to change the beam spread and edge feathering smoothly and quickly. The final negative is the included stand. As other reviews have written, it's marginal at best. The stand is short, flimsy and really nothing more than an inexpensive tripod light stand with a custom mount. To make matters worse, it arrived with a missing nut, so I couldn't properly assemble the stand. Chauvet's support team was attentive and polite but ultimately USELESS - BECAUSE THEY DO NOT CARRY PARTS FOR THE STAND. The stand and light seem to be a Chauvet product in name only! FWIW, I was able to solve this problem with a trip to the hardware store and an off-the-self 6mm nut. If you've read this far and still think this instrument is for you, then I'll note some positives. The weight is great and easily portable. The color selector works smoothly. The built-in dimmer is a great feature, as is the simple push button black out.

question

What is the max. effective throw distance?
Asked by: John A. D.
So the specs show it as a 14-20 beam angle. That suggests that for usual followspot use, you wouldn't want to be more than 50-60 feet away, as the size of the pool of light will be about 10' wide at its smallest at that point, though the iris would get it smaller, but you're going to lose brightness by using the iris much. 30' would be ideal, and about 15' would be your minimum.
