question

Hi- Does this allow the upper part to swivel 360 degrees freely independently of the lower part? Thanks.
Asked by: William P.
NO! Quite the contrary, in fact. The upper portion has an aluminum cylinder that has a flat area on its side, and the ridged spring-loaded center portion (which you pull downward to release the connection) has a corresponding flat area to receive it. The amount of play is probably about 5 degrees. But beware if you happen to try to rotate it. The ridged retainer is made of PLASTIC, with a couple of indentations in it that weaken its structural integrity. If you are able to rotate the upper portion you have cracked the plastic retainer and effectively destroyed the adapter. I speak from experience, having ruined a couple myself.Either try the all-metal units from On Stage (which have their own loose-fitting issues) or the more compact design from K&M (which still contains plastic but it isn't as likely to break as the Ultimate. To the best of my knowledge, no one makes an adapter of this sort that allows free rotation of the two sections, and no one makes one that is suitably stationary and strong.
