I bought this a while ago, and it is indeed a fine device. Especially with the LED lighting, it lights up the object very nicely. And it's very easy to use, especially on a flat surface. However, I don't know how Carson can claim 5X magnification. I measured the linear lens diameter compared to the image diameter, and I came up with 1.01. I also measured the lens area compared to the image area, and I came up with 1.26. This is not even close to 5X. This is very peculiar, because when I view something through the viewer, the image does appear to be "bigger" than the actual object, and I can understand why most reviewers give it high marks. But from a mathematical point of view, it isn't even close to 5X magnification.
This magnifier is nice. My mom uses it to do puzzles. It's solid, sturdy and not cheap plasticy.
