Metz 15 MS-1 overview

  • 1Description

The Metz Mecablitz 15 MS-1 Macro Ringlight Digital Flash Kit includes the MS-1 Ringlight, a bounce diffuser, 52, 55, 58, 62, 67, and 72 mm adapter rings, an IR filter bracket, belt pouch and a sync cable. This advanced macro ringlight flash provides full wireless TTL control with virtually any SLR camera system. The MS-1 supports Canon, Nikon, Olympus/Panasonic, Pentax/Samsung and Sony Alpha.

Each of the two separate flash tubes inside the ring light is individually controllable. Each of their reflectors can be swiveled with a range of 0-20°. The Ratio Control feature allows for separate light distribution settings for the left and right sides of the flash, while the variable power setting allows for 6 levels of output. In addition, the included diffuser provides further softening of the light output.

The dedicated wireless TTL control function and the fact that it runs on 2 AAA batteries does away with the need for cumbersome flash cables. As long as the camera has a built-in flash, or a dedicated shoe mount flash set to master mode, the MS-1 will fully integrate with virtually all SLR camera systems. In slave mode, the MS-1 is suitable for all camera models with manual flash functionality via a standard PC sync cord. The 15 MS-1 learning function ensures that the slave flash is reliably triggered every time by the flash integrated in the camera is fired.

Metz 15 MS-1 reviews

Mecablitz 15 MS-1 Macro Ringlight Digital Flash Kit is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 11.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Dental Photography Macro Use this with Nikon D7100 and Nikon 85 mm lens. Macro ring light is great quality, works well with my setup. The camera, flash, lens combo is light enough be to be used with one hand for the average person. We use this to take photos on patients for documentation. I find the flash strength is sufficient, and the color balance is fine. I do find the TTL strength on the flash is a little off for dental oral photos. For frontal photos I set the EV down -0.7 to get less washout look, full arch and side shots are fine. Claims not to use rechargeable batteries due to breakage. But if you do the math that would be expensive really fast. I use Eneloops, and haven't had any problems

Rated 4 out of 5 by from lightweight, well built This is the first time i purchase a flash. Not very experienced. But I think this review will be helpful to some. Did some reading and liked the idea of wireless application. I'm a dentist and use this for clinical pre-op and post-op photos. I found the exposure very good, but not always. Only bothersome thing is the plastic clip that goes over the pop up flash. Its flimsy, likely to fall and be misplaced and just barely hanging on. In comparison to other non wireless units, the Metz is very light and reduces fatigue from heavy camera setups.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from needs some adjustments by Metz This unit is light and compact, will fit easily into a gadget bag, and the controls are straight forward and intuitive. Two AAA batteries provide surprisingly quick recycling. The LED light helps focusing in marginal light. The variable right/left balance is handy. BUT, on my Pentax it overexposed by about two stops and the exposure was not 100% consistent when the reproduction ratio was changed. I would probably have to use it in manual mode all the time. That is not acceptable. After testing, I returned the unit to B&H.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Flash for Clincal Photography I take all of my clinical dentistry photos with this flash, and actually have to raise the F stop since it is so bright!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Worked well for the price The flash lasted me about 3.5 years. Unfortunately it just stopped working recently and the repair was going to cost as much as a new one. It's a simple flash that is easy to use. It lasted throughout my dental residency and my photos came out well. I invested in a canon flash this time but the Metz flash worked well for the price.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from great for outdoors I have used this for several years for outdoor photography. I have dragged it through the rainforests of Ecuador, Costa Rica, and Mexico as well as out in the deserts of the SW US. I have found this unit very dependable. I have dropped it several times and it has always worked. The diffuser that comes with it falls off constantly and is a real pain to keep track of so I made a small diffuser for each flash tube and velcro'ed them on. I have used it with a sync cord and with the Sony wireless system. Both work well. I also own the Sony Macro Flash which costs almost twice as much, but frankly I am more likely to take this thing with me out in the field because it provides excellent results and there are no cables, etc., to tangle on branches and things. If I broke mine, I would buy another without hesitation. A really good buy in my experience. I reviewed it for a herping forum with photos here -

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Unreliable and runs blue I got mine barely used in perfect condition from a local photographer. The big draw with this flash is the relatively small size and the multi-brand compatibility. Unlike most macro flashes, there is no head unit on top. So you trade a lot of bulk on the hot shoe for a little more bulk at the end of the lens. In person, it appears much sleeker than Canon and Olympus's native ring flashes, though Nikon's iTTL twin flash setup is sleeker still. And like Nikon, it only works as a slave flash, though many brands are supported. As such, your camera must have a pop up flash for this to work. I've tried it with both Canon and Olympus wireless flash. Metering was close enough, but the white balance was seriously off. Even when the camera is set to flash white balance, it is seriously way too blue. First time I used it, I thought I had left the camera on tungsten white balance. This flash must be putting out 8000k light or something. Yes, you can correct this in RAW or put in a warming CTO gel, but every other flash I've owned roughly fits into the 5500k flash white balance preset of the camera. As for performance, the output is probably a stop or two less than Canon's MR-14EX, and the dual AAA batteries just can't give you the recycle time of a larger flash's 4xAA supply. Macro photography isn't a rapid fire discipline, but if you use this flash, pop in freshly charged batteries for every use. Definitely not enough power for portrait use unless you shoot really, really tight. The build quality is marginal. Body is all plastic, and you can hear a little rattle inside. It did not survive a three foot drop, so I sent it into Manfrotto for a rather expensive repair. Two months later, it again stopped working. If it sounds like I don't like this flash, you're correct. It's sitting in a landfill somewhere by now. Sorry Metz, I like your larger flashes, but I'd rather use a pringles can diffuser than this piece of junk.
