Westcott SkyLux overview

  • 1Description

Housed in a compact all-metal housing, the SkyLux LED Light from Westcott is a powerful LED source capable of delivering up to 1200 tungsten equivalent watts of output at a digital-friendly color temperature of 5600K and a high CRI of 94. Wescott keeps the SkyLux lightweight by separating the flicker-free ballast from the head, allowing for a multitude of placement options. Dimming control from 30-100% makes excessive repositioning or use of scrims and ND filters unnecessary.

The SkyLux has a 60-degree beam angle and comes with a tilting 5/8" stand mount and a reflector with an umbrella slot. Its extra-long 20' power cord ensures ample movement around the studio.

    Westcott SkyLux reviews

SkyLux LED Light is rated 4.3 out of 5 by 11.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Produces marvelous Light! This piece of kit is wonderful. The gorgeous light is creates is wonderful. This light is well made. Simple in it's design and certainly appears designed to take rough use. The ballast being a separate entity is a plus in my opinion. A versatile light as well. Works well with my umbrellas and brolly's. The light when used with the Apollo Orb is my favorite. If you are looking to get into continous light portraits like I was this is the way to go.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Adds -15db of fan noise to your set. Not usable for video work if set audio is important to you. Pitch and volume of the fan noise varies with the light intensity. If audio is not important, seems like a powerful light in a small form factor.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Save Time in Post For me this was a very nice upgrade. I use these lights in my video production work and find that it is much easier to preserver natural skin tones with these lights over other LEDs. I only use these indoors and have to mention that they are not strong enough to compete with sunlight...so a controlled environment will get the best performance out of these lights. Another point worth mentioning is how inexpensive it is to use light modifiers with these lights.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nice, Soft Light This light produces a nice, soft, natural looking light; especially when lit thru a 1-stop fabric. Also, the 'intensity' control on the back of the light gives a nice range of power. The light is built well and produces a very true 56K. It's produces a little bit noisy when it's been on for a while but nothing that would interfere with audio recording.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nice unit I really like this light for DSLR video work. True to all the Westcott stuff I own, it's well made and nicely designed. I was bummed it had a ballast, but surprised that it's so easy to deal with -- even though they never show pictures of it. (Ballast is small and comes in a nice padded sleeve that hooks on your light stand.) And the fan is just about silent, making the unit perfect for sound shooting.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect I used the SkyLux for a video shoot. 1/3 rd power was more than enough. I was plesantly surprised. Only complaint was that my Calumet speed ring was very difficult to fit on. This may be a Calumet issue though. I would recommend this product, defiantly!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from No strobe replacement but still useful Got this as a strobe replacement. It's not that as it simply doesn't output enough light to do the job. However, as a supplemental device (highlighting, fill lighting) it works great and it can use existing sofboxes, umbrellas, etc. But the unit would need to be at least 3x brighter if you wanted to replace a key light. The build quality is great and it runs cool. The light is diffused and the fans are near silent. I plan on using them for background and fill. It cannot be used to replace your key light. So I'm still searching for a light that is both powerful enough and flexible enough. I also own a Mole-Richardson JUNIOR-LED (200w). That preduces enough light to be a key light but it's a fresnel (which is cool but not always what you want). If I could take that quantum dot Mole-Richardson light source and place it in the SkyLux body, then I would have found the perfect device.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fan is quiet enough for video Quality of the light is phenomenal, but I wanted to comment about the noise level from the fan. I'm a video shooter and was concerned about this, but I can say that while the fan does get a bit louder when the light has been on for a while, it has yet to be an issue with audio. If you're properly micing your subjects (lav or boom), it shouldn't be an issue at all.
