This lens hood is solid and works extremely well. My only complaint is that you really have to take it off to adjust a CPL filter. It's simply too deep to reach in and turn a polarizer effectively. Other than that the last one I had did a great job of protecting my 80-400 lens when my camera bit the dust and landed on solid rock.

will this fit the older af 80-400mm ed lens?

No it doesn't. I had read somewhere, or thought I did, that this lens hood would fit but it doesn't. It's too big.
