StarTech ICUSBAUDIO7D Overview

The StarTech 7.1 USB Audio Adapter External Sound Card creates a connection with a computer's USB port to your speakers to deliver 7.1-channel surround sounds. This external adapter lets you add high-quality audio to your notebook or desktop without having to open the system for installation. It supports analog as well as digital audio and has 44.1 and 48 kHz sampling rates for both playback and recording. Additionally, StarTech has equipped it with onboard buttons so you can easily control the volume.

This external sound card sports 3.5mm output connectors that provide front, surround, rear, and center/bass connectivity. It comes with a mic right-channel jack and a mic left-channel jack, letting you record sounds that have depth with two microphones. Included along with the adapter are a USB cable and an installation CD for a hassle-free experience.

The StarTech external sound card solved all of the problems I had with the new HP All-in-One I bought that has only integrated speakers. No input, no way to attach outside audio like a turntable. The StarTech card works extraordinarily well. I plugged the turntable into it, using a pre-amp, and it now I can use the turntable to record the rest of my vinyl to the computer. I am EXCEPTIONALLY pleased with this purchase! It literally turned an $850 game playing cellphone into a working unit, and the sound does not require additional speakers! The unit utilizes the integrated speakers in the computer. The only very, very small issue (not even a problem) is that I need to have one of the Acoustica programs running with monitor engaged to hear the sound. For an old time fiddler like me that was the easiest solve. And as you can see in the picture, it is small enough it will fit anywhere. That black thing laying against it is 7 port USB extender so that gives you an idea of it's size. This sound card was the best $40 I've spent yet. Thanks, B&H! You guys are the best!

No, the StarTech 7.1 USB Audio Adapter External Sound Card BH #STICUSBAUD7D only accepts speakers with 3.5mm or SPDIF connections.

Will it work if I use a cd player connected to line in or spdif without turning on the computer? Is there a way to power the unit without using a computer and using instead a cellphone USB cable charger or other power source?

The StarTech 7.1 USB Audio Adapter External Sound Card B&H # STICUSBAUD7D only works when plugged in to a computer. It does not work standalone.

Are ALL settings retained when power is turned OFF, then ON again?

The StarTech 7.1 USB Audio Adapter External Sound Card BH #STICUSBAUD7D settings are stored in the Windows sound settings. In normal operation the settings will be retained.

As long as the speaker has a 1/8" / 3.5 mm compatibility it would work due to the device supporting full 7.1 audio output.

Does this work with self-powered microphones? or only with cheaper plug-in power ones (like headset mics). I want to use it with a semi-pro Sony ECM-MS957 which has a stereo 1/8 plug (I can buy an adapter to split to two mono 1/8 plugs). Some interfaces have a capacitor or something inside that charges up and mutes the mic after a minute or so if it's not the plug-in-power type.
