The HB-63 Lens Hood from Nikon is compatible with the AF-S NIKKOR 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5G ED VR lens. It helps reduce flare caused by stray light from the sun or other light sources, and also protects the lens' front element against impact if you get too close to your subject.
This hood functions just fine, but lacks a positive "click" to keep it in place. At this price you shouldn't need to add strips of gaffer tape for security.
I recently lost my original lens hood. It never really locked on to the front of the lens. In my nature photography I often have my camera around my neck on a strap. The lens hood is so light if it falls off while walking you most likely won't hear it. Since it is black and fairly small, if it dropped into some high grass or brush you probably won't find it. Since I ALWAYS use a hood, I needed a replacement ASAP. B&H shipped an original replacement a day earlier than notified and less than a week since the original order via standard shipping. The new lens hood does lock on more securely both in use and reversed on the lens for storage.
