Sony MEAD-SD02 Overview

The MEAD-SD02 SDHC/SDXC Card Adapter from Sony enables the use of a Class 10 SDHC/SDXC memory card, including UHS-1, in the ExpressCard slot of XDCAM EX equipment, such as camcorders and recording decks. It will also work with other ExpressCard compatible hardware, such as Windows and Mac computers and storage drives.

Although the SxS PRO and SxS-1 cards intended for the memory slots in XDCAM models offer higher performance, SDHC and SDXC cards are more readily available in a pinch when additional memory is required. This adapter, which is the same size as an SxS memory card, provides a viable solution in this type of situation.

Please note that use of the slow motion recording function is not recommended, due to the speed limitations of SD cards. XDCAM EX hardware may require a firmware upgrade in order to support the use of the adapter.

In short, Sony as always Sony. I bought it for my PXW-Z280, and it could become great and affordable solution for replace very expensive SxS cards, but Sony killed this idea. This adapter use RTS5187 chip from Realtek. Realtek is known for its inexpensive but not very reliable solutions. But what what is the most terrible in fact inside this is just a USB 2.0 to SD card adapter, and it doesn't support cards higher than UHS-I. And tests of solution where same chip used, showed that speed is only around 35 MB/s for read and 25 MB/s for record, so no make sense to buy high speed SD cards. In fact this is ExpressCard to SD card adapter. Just Sony calls his version of ExpressCard differently, they call it SXS. Inside SxS have two different type of connection, first one is USB 2.0 and second one is PCIe. So no any limitations for make an adapter for V60 or V90 SD cards, but Sony don't care about it. For now for record in maximum speed on my PXW-Z280 I need to buy SxS cards which have the price almost like the camera itself and it is just ridiculous. Another option to use SxS to XQD adapter, but Sony removed it from production. In any good quality mode I see Not Guaranteed Media, so no make sense spend money for Sony adapter and probably better to buy any good brand ExpressCard to SD card adapter, same Not Guaranteed Media on the camera, but for a quarter of price. So, how I said before, Sony as always Sony, they did similar things earlier, make them now, and most likely they will do in the future.

I bought the cheaper Sonnet adapters and they sucked! Replaced with these Sonys and no problems any longer.

Is this card adapter Compatible to the Sandisk Extreme Pro SDXC UHS-ll Card 128gb V90?
Asked by: Mike
Yes, the Sony SD Card Adaptor should work with SDXC UHS-II cards when used with models that support the SDXC format (as opposed to SD and SDHC). However, according to Sony, there might be compatibility issues on the XDCAM EX models you're using as compatibility with SDXC is not guaranteed.
