Olympus BLN-1 reviews

BLN-1 Rechargeable Lithium-ion Battery is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 109.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Don't get knock-offs, get the real thing I went the knock-off route to save money and was of course dissapointed. The options for cheaper batteries to replace this one are as follows: those that cost about 1/2 of these that last about 1/2 as long and cannot be charged on the olympus charger; and those that cost about $8 but last about 50 shots as opposed to 350 which also do not work on the Olympus charger. If you do the math you spend as much but have to drag another charger along with you and have to switch batteries out more often. I bet the $8 ones break quickly too. Do yourself a favor and just get a real Olympus spare and save yourself the hassle.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I don't regret buying this battery... Camera batteries are essential to the use of the camera. The choice to buy a battery that is not sold by the camera manufacturer, though it might save 50% or more in cost, comes with a compromise that I am no longer willing to make. Too many times I have taken an off brand battery from my bag, and even though it was topped off on the charger the day before, had it drop dead on me after a few shots. Batteries do not live forever, I know. But the batteries sold by the camera manufacturer, do seem to live longer and perform more reliably. I am wiling to pay twice the price for the reliability. (But I do wish it weren't necessary. :-)

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A needed essential if you shoot a lot I've never found a digital camera that will last a full day of shooting on a single battery so I've always had a back-up. This Olympus BLN-1 is a direct replacement for the one that came with my OMD-EM1 camera. The battery was about half charged when I received it so I charged it as soon as I got it. After a full charge I took it out to shoot and it lasted about as long as the original (I didn't time it or count frames). My only issue with this (or any) OEM battery is the cost charged for them, thus the 4 star rating. Otherwise, this battery will work fine as a replacement or spare battery for your Olympus camera.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Accept Only The Genuine Article (with English on the back) I have four of these genuine BLN-1s now -- one that came with the OM-1, two I bought from B&H and one I ordered through another supplier. The latter one showed up partially charged and has just Asian typography in the bottom recycling back panel. The other three batteries are all labeled in English. The other defining characteristics of the Asian-labeled BLN-1 are the relatively hollow sound a finger makes when tapping the wide gray side of the battery ... and the weight. The Asian-labeled battery is about a half-ounce lighter than the others. This might be why the charge doesn't last as long on that one. So buyer beware, but I've never gotten a bad battery from B&H.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good battery beware of counterfeits First off, my warning. Buy this battery here or a reputable retailer and avoid all others. I was cheap and tried purchasing one elsewhere and it was 100% counterfeit (confirmed by Olympus). I have added photos here showing the difference between the counterfeit and a genuine battery. View the end of my review for a summary as well. The battery itself there is not much to say it is identical to the one that came with the camera if you have an OM-D or Pen E-P5 and will work better than any of the aftermarket batteries out there. I chose to buy a genuine battery because most of the aftermarket ones apparently do not work with the on camera battery gauge and I like to know how much battery life is left. The one I purchased here at B&H is genuine and can be seen in the photos I have attached. Now, for a summary of how to know if you got a counterfeit: 1. Counterfeits have the word Japan spelled with a lowercase j on the battery label 2. Counterfeits are the wrong weight. Real batteries are 50 grams, the counterfeit I received are 38 grams. 3. The battery terminals are an off color on the counterfeit. 4. The packaging on the counterfeit has a matte finish and the coloration is all faded. Packaging on the real batteries will be glossy and have rich coloration. 5. Genuine packages typically have a seal on top. 6. Genuine packages will include the battery inside of a zip-loc type bag while the counterfeits come in flimsy plastic bags. 7. The tabs on the bottom of the counterfeit batteries are rectangular and not square as they should be. 8. Both genuine and counterfeits batteries processed in Vietnam will have the misspelling explose on the label. Do not assume it is counterfeit just because of this misspelling.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Olympus Batteries are worth the price I have purchased at least two different brands of batteries for my E-M1 and neither of them have remained serviceable. On the other hand, the original BLN-1 is still working and does not appear to have lost any of it power. The other batteries did continue to work but both brands within several months swelled so that they would not slip comfortably into the battery slot. Not wanting to risk having a battery jammed in the camera, I tossed them and went back to OEM Olympus. The cheap batteries, while they do work, do not offer any peace of mind, cheap or not.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Battery-Original OEM This is a original Olympus Pen F battery, it has a greater capacity (1220 mAh) over the available after market battery. It is specifically designed to mate seamlessly with the original Pen F BCN-1 Battery Charger. It serves well as a back up battery. Regrettably, it does not come with a plastic protective case, which in my opinion, is a must have. The spare battery is stored in my camera bag, a protective battery case would reduce the possibility of a potential short if it ever came in contact with a metal object. As a work around I store this battery in a plastic bag with a rubber band wrapped around it..

Rated 5 out of 5 by from No Problems and Great Safety Tips that could Save a Life I purchased two of these batteries to use in my Olympus E-M5 ii. Despite predictions of cataclysmic doom from Olympus, the batteries charged without a mishap using the more intelligent Wasabi wall charger. On a recent daytrip to New York City I got over 1100+ photos from the two batteries, or averaged 550+ photos per battery. This was using the camera in single shot mode (never burst mode), no flash, and no video. The batteries come with a set of instructions for those of us that have an IQ of less than 70. Thank goodness for the instructions because I was thinking of storing the batteries in cat urine. I was even thinking of disassembling the batteries but the instructions kept me on the right track. And, when a neighbor's child swallowed one, I knew what to do. My friend and I were going to play handball with the batteries but then I recalled the sage advice from the instructions not to throw the batteries. Phew! That was a close one. Way to go Olympus! Don't show any respect to your customers.
