Nikon 18-140mm f/3.5-5.6 overview

  • 1Description

The AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-140mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR Lens from Nikon is a multi-purpose zoom lens capable of wide-angle and telephoto imaging with a 35mm focal length equivalence of 27-210mm. This all-in-one zoom lens is compatible with DX format cameras and FX format cameras in crop mode. It features an extra-low dispersion (ED) glass element and an aspherical element to improve edge sharpness and clarity while correcting chromatic and geometric distortions. Nikon's Super Integrated Lens Coating (SIC) improves light transmission and reduces ghosting and flare. The combination of high-quality optics and a broad zoom range make the 18-140mm an ideal lens for travel and other tasks that demand functionality without sacrificing portability.

Nikon's Silent Wave Motor (SWM) autofocus mechanism provides near-silent auto focusing that is both fast and accurate. Combined with Vibration Reduction (VR) image stabilization, the SWM AF system equips the AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-140mm for handheld video recording as well as fast-action photography. Additionally, manual autofocus override allows instant switching to manual focus without taking your eye off the subject. The minimum focus distance is 1.48' and its 7-blade rounded aperture helps to provide pleasing out-of-focus backgrounds.

Compatible with DX-sized image sensors and FX format sensors in crop mode.
The 7.8x magnification ratio provides a versatile 18-140mm zoom range which is equivalent to 27-210mm in the 35mm format and covers wide-angle to telephoto perspectives.
Vibration Reduction can provide up to four stops of image stabilization for sharper handheld photos and video.
One aspherical and one ED lens element reduce chromatic aberration and help improve image sharpness, color and clarity.
The Nikon Super Integrated Coated lens system enhances light transmission and reduces lens flare.
Internal focus system means only the internal lens elements move during focusing allowing for compact, lightweight lenses capable of closer focusing distances and more practical usage of specialty filters.
The Silent Wave Motor autofocus mechanism provides quick, quiet and precise auto focusing.
Manual focus override allows instant switching between AF and MF focusing systems for greater control of focus placement.

    Nikon 18-140mm f/3.5-5.6 reviews

AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-140mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR Lens is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 96.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great all-around lens I wanted a lens that I could keep on the camera most of the time. This one fits the bill. The 18-55 kit lens is sometimes too short. The 55-200 kit lens is sometimes too long. This lens spans almost the entire range, while still only about the size of the 55-200mm lens. A good length for portraits - wide enough for group shots, and long enough to get shots without getting in too close. I was thinking this would be the perfect kit lens, and I see that Nikon has started offering it as a primary option. I have 7 other lenses that work on my DX camera, but this is the one that will be mounted most of the time.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Broad shooting coverage lens My first forey into digital cameras was a D80 package with two lenses: 18-55 and 55-200. Shooting nature mostly, wild animals and landscapes, I purchased a 70-300 and 10-24 lens to compliment my original setup. Unfortunately, I found myself having to carry all four lens to cover the shooting spectrum. I spent a lot of time changing lenses and exposing the camera internals to dust. The 18-140 covers ninety-five percent of my shooting needs and replaces two lenses with one. It works great and remains on the camera as my primary lens. It was worth the expense to supercede the original two lenses with my D80.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Outstanding New Lens I am not a professional photographer, just someone who loves taking pictures for my own enjoyment. I shoot a Nikon d7000 and had been using the excellent Nikkor 18-55 VR zoom for several years. But as I got more and more into photography I found that I needed a little more reach at the long end than the 18-55 provided. This lens meets my needs perfectly. It is not much heavier than the other lens, feels good in my hands, zooms effortlessly, focuses quickly, provides very sharp images, and renders colors beautifully. I now use it as my walking around lens and leave it on the camera just about all the time. This lens does everything well, and I recommend it strongly.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great carry around lens I bought this lens to use it around for street photography, photojournalism and travel. Its not the fastest lens but its very sharp across most of the focal length. Here where I live (Puerto Rico) we have tropical weather and sunny days most of the time so light is not really an issue. I do recommend it to that student/semi-pro photographer to have it in your camera all the time. Construction is very solid typical of the Nikon brand. For me it actually balances the weight in my Nikon D7100, I'm 5'8 150pds and it feels great even after carrying it around in strikes and the such for several hours.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good All purpose lens I got this lens with my Nikon D7000. Initially, I hated this lens as I wasn't able to get proper pictures. But I much later found out it was the fault in my technique, specially that I was using the Auto mode. I am using this lens in all manual modes, now it gives much better quality. Someone mentioned it does not perform in low light, I have attached a picture taken in total dark with just a candlelight, at its low end of the maximum aperture which is f/5.6. It does a pretty good job of low light capture. The Autofocus is fast, no problems there. A versatile lens for everything.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good enough to capture moments I've had this lens for almost a year and have used it in many different situations including beach sunsets, landscapes, city walking, and cars. I bought it used and for the price it has served its purpose well, to capture moments. BUT I would not recommend it for much else. It is very soft, especially when zoomed in. I have noticed on several occasions it completely missed the zoom, perhaps that is my fault but it just seems to happen to often. All in all it is a good lens, but I plan on upgrading to much better soon.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Super Zoom all in 1 A decent lens that covers a lot of ground. I got this for travel and backpacking. PROS: good image quality across the zoom range, small, light, compact, no lens creep, metal mount, 5yr warranty, manual focus override, easy 1 finger focus, low CA, and good VR system. This lens works well for just about any situation and makes a great travel lens. Not superior in any aspect, but very good in all areas. CONS: Zoom ring is tight, perhaps to avoid lens creep. Not ideal for video, like all all-in-one lens' it has a lot of distortion on both ends. But it's easily corrected in camera and LR5. Harder to correct in video software. Also, no lens hood. Only regret is, I didn't get it as a kit with the D7100. Below is a panning shot using the VR at 70mm 1/20 sec, ISO 100, f/27. ND filter was used. Also, a Panorama of the Strip shot from the edge town about 15 mils away at 140mm, ISO 100, f/5.6, 1/2 sec on a tripod.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Definitely worth it I bought this as a stand alone lens, not as part of a kit. When I first got it and tested for resolution on my D7100 I was disappointed that I coulld not get an image as sharp as I wanted. Then I did an AF auto fine tune on it and the camera. The sharpness improved significantly. I did however set the finne tune to +13, which is more than any of my other Nikon lenses. Properly focus fine tuned to your camera I believe this is an excellent lens, well worth what it cost.
