Sony has announced the VENICE 2 Extension System Mini, a new iteration of the popular Rialto expansion unit that allows users to disconnect the sensor block from the body of their VENICE 2 to make the camera more nimble and portable. The Extension System Mini is about 70% smaller and lighter than its predecessor, the VENICE Extension System 2, and features the full-frame 8.6K sensor that has made the VENICE 2 such a popular option for high-end production. The Extension System Mini also has nine drop-in ND filters, a detachable 15’ cable, and an included adapter to change its native E-mount into a PL mount.
The new Extension System Mini is only 2.5 x 4 x 2.4”, making it ideal for gimbal and handheld work, as well as more complex rigging scenarios like cars, helicopters, and other vehicles. The System weighs just 1 lb when using the E-mount or 2 lb with the PL adapter attached. Similar to its predecessor, the Extension System Mini can pass metadata and lens communication back to the main brain of the camera in real time, which is extremely useful for virtual production and VFX work. The PL adapter even has a “LENS META IN” LEMO 4-pin connector to utilize Cooke /i protocol.

The Extension System Mini will work with VENICE 2 8K and 6K camera bodies, allowing 6K owners to shoot in 8.6K for the first time. The Extension has a tilt/roll gyro sensor for real time level display, two assignable buttons, a 24V Fischer 3-Pin power output for additional accessories, and a set of nine drop-in ND filters (0.3, 0.6, 0.9, 1.2,1.5, 1.8, 2.1 and 2.4, and clear). These ND filters and the detachable cable will also be available to purchase separately. Expect the system to start shipping later this year.
