For the Internet-savvy Fujifilm X-series camera shooter, new lens announcements never really come as a surprise because Fujifilm's official X Mount Lens Roadmap tells us what is coming next. What we don't usually get is the specs of those lenses, so we are left to speculate about the lens, dream of eventually getting our hands on one, and hope that it meets our high expectations for Fujifilm lenses. Well, today, the highly anticipated FUJINON XF 8-16mm f/2.8 R LM WR ultra wide-angle lens and FUJINON XF200 f/2 R LM OIS and XF 1.4x TC F2 WR Teleconverter Kit have been made official, complete with mouth-watering specs.
FUJINON XF 8-16mm f/2.8 R LM WR Ultra Wide-Angle Lens
How wide is too wide? I have no idea. The new XF 8-16mm f/2.8 R LM WR gives X-series shooters the 35mm equivalent field of view of a 12-24mm lens on a full-frame camera—by far the widest Fujinon X-series lens available. That is wide.
The complex lens packs in 20 elements of glass in 13 groups, including 4 aspherical lens elements to control distortion and spherical aberration, and 6 ED lens elements—3 of them to control lateral chromatic aberration. With a body packed full of exotic optics, we have a lens designed for advanced image-resolving performance across the entire zoom range. The lens also features a field curvature correction element that adjusts according to the position of the zoom; the optic achieves edge-to-edge sharpness while correcting field curvature that is typically found with ultra-wide angle lenses. The lens barrel is lightweight and sealed at 11 points to be weather and dust resistant and capable of operating in temperatures as low as 14°F.

Nothing excites sports and action shooters like wide-aperture telephoto glass. The officially announced XF 200mm f/2 R LM OIS WR telephoto fills that bill by gobbling up lots of light at f/2 while providing a long-range 35mm equivalent field of view of 305mm. With the XF 1.4x TC teleconverter kit, you blast out to an equivalent 427mm field of view at f/2.8.
This premium optic houses 19 elements in 14 groups, including one large-diameter super ED lens element and two large-diameter ED lens elements to minimize chromatic aberration. High-precision polishing technology, developed by Fujinon for its legendary broadcast lenses, was applied to the large-diameter lens to achieve outstanding image-resolving performance and beautiful bokeh. The lens also features a new Focus Preset function that quickly changes the focus to a preset position, helping to improve and simplify composing and focusing.
Utilizing linear motors, the big lens achieves fast, near silent and high-precision AF performance, and features a new mechanism that fixes the motor group when the camera is not in use to reduce any vibrations that may occur—a welcome addition to those who are disconcerted by the rattling of their other powered-down Fujifilm LM lenses. The lens offers 5-stop image stabilization performance that recognizes shooting conditions and automatically applies optimal image stabilization control. Magnesium-alloy construction keeps the weight down. Like its distant wide-angle cousin, the lens is sealed (17 points on this one) and designed to be weather and dust resistant and to operate in temperatures as low as 14°F.
Are you a Fujifilm X-shooter who is ready to go wider than you have ever gone before, or reach into the telephoto range at a wide f/2 aperture? What are your thoughts? Let us know in the Comments section, below.
