Leica’s newest M-mount lens, the silver chrome Summilux-M 50mm f/1.4, resurrects the look and feel of its film-era origins with modern optics to match the brand’s stable of high-resolution mirrorless cameras. The fifth member of the Leica Classic Line, the lens’s wide maximum aperture and naked-eye focal length yield outstanding results in both sharpness and bokeh, making it ideal for portrait photography.
This 2025 Summilux 50mm f/1.4 takes its vintage barrel design cue from the very first generation of the lens that debuted in 1959. Composed of more than 100 different parts, the solid brass construction sports the classic silver chrome finish reminiscent of Leica’s storied legacy.

Optically, the construction is inspired by the second generation Summilux released in 1962—considered by many to be the pinnacle of the lens class—and features the same seven-element, five-group structure and manual focus design. A combination of new manufacturing techniques, modern glass elements, and lens coatings contribute to this lens’s compatibility with the company’s high-resolution M-mount cameras. Producing superior contrast and sharpness when stopped down, the lens’s 12-blade aperture creates incredibly soft bokeh when shot wide open. The lens also has a shorter minimum focusing distance than its predecessor at 2.3’.

Like all M-mount lenses, this Summilux lens is made in Germany. It comes with a vintage-inspired lens hood, along with front and rear lens caps and a leather carrying case. The lens is also an occasion for the debut of the brand’s newly designed packaging.
